Sure, i totally agree with you, Ukraine is legitimate to retake Donbass and Crimea, i was just "explaining" what yingyang probably meant, and explaining that we need to be aware of the risk.
During the precedent proxy wars during cold wars, never fighting happened on the territory that one of the nuclear powers consider as its own. Russia considers Crimea as its own, so there is the unknown here, that never happened before

It was not always Russian for most of its history. It was a vassal state of many powers since the 1400’s. Before that it was the Scythians and Greeks.
Russia ceded Crimea to Ukraine in 1954. And further acknowledge that arrangement when Ukraine voted for independence in the 90’s.
Russia did not argue it then. So it is incorrect to just assume it is Russian.
They willingly gave up control and claims to Crimea twice in the last 60 years.
So Crimea will continue to be a contested territory for the next sixty years or so.
This is a long game fight that has been going back and forth for three centuries.
This is the same old bowl of Cheerios Russia has been crying in for the last 250 yrs. Todays Europe is not the same europe of the 16th 17th and 18th century.
Russias historic dreams of expansion were and are just as destructive as Germany’s was.

Don’t expect a final resolution anytime soon.
