President Lee Jae Myung on Saturday proposed that the two Koreas begin talks on ending their long-running war and discuss practical ways to halt the advancement of Pyongyang's nuclear program, pledging to seek a peace regime on the Korean Peninsula.

South Korea president proposes talks with North to formally end Korean War

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung proposed talks with North Korea to formally end the long-running Korean War, as Pyongyang deepens ties with Russia while asserting its status as an "irreversible" nuclear state.

The two Koreas remain technically at war because their 1950-53 conflict, triggered by a North Korean attack, ended with an armistice rather than a peace treaty.

Lee made the proposal in his speech at a ceremony marking the anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japan's 1910-45 colonial rule.

Hm…. I admit I didn’t see this on my bingo card.

Now I start to think… formal end to the war is a step towards reunification. Should reunification take place, The South Koreans would effectively rebuild the North, with international help. Would this be a blow to China, I wonder…

When the South westernizes the North, the population may not want communism…. I don’t see Rocket Man giving up power that quickly. I also don’t see the two governments effectively merging right away. Kim Jong Un would need to face Charges on crimes against humanity, he won’t let that happen.

Who benefits from a formal end to the war? I really don’t think anyone really does. What do you think? @DEFCON Warning System @DarkNoon @Torch @RiffRaff
