Here is the thing. These balloons fly very high. Up in the stratosphere They barely reflect the radio signal, so they almost never shot down with radar-guided air defense missiles and, they don't care for cannon fire either, because they have a cellular structure and you need a special anti-aerostatic projectile, the feature of which was an ultra-sensitive fuse capable of cocking from touching the thinnest shell balloon. And their presence in equipment of current U.S. aircraft is a big question. In the USSR, special aircraft were made for the destruction of these things, and special planes with special weapons were developed. Well, the most effective (and in fact the only) method remains an attack with IR seeker missiles in an attempt to capture the side of the balloon heated by the Sun.
All the talk about that the Americans do not want to shoot them down is, of course, nonsense. They can not. They have nothing. Either the characteristics of the weapons of the US planes do not allow, or the skill of the pilots. But once again I will repeat. Balloons, are an extremely difficult target. And if ordinary residents of the United States did not spotted and raised alarm about this Chinese probe, the Pentagon would pretend that nothing had happened. Now try to sort it out and explain how the first army of the planet cannot shoot down an enemy balloon over the country. 😁

I would offer that the US has the capability, but want to “capture” it for the treasure trove of espionage equipment they may recover from it.
Another question may be, does China not have a self destruct mechanism they can trigger aboard the balloon.

Why doesn't it either be shot down over an area that is appropriate, or if concern about it containing something of concern, then why don't they hook onto it and move it out to sea. Why let them spy on us? Also, I don't see how we are at Defcon 5? It should be defcon 3. Just my opinion of coarse. But I would think Defcon 4 would be mandatory at this point. Russian situation alone warrants this.

I would have to agree on a 4 at this point, the situation can progress 0-100 in seconds and this balloon is fishy as hell.
 
Relax, it's just a weather balloon. ;)

China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement Friday that the balloon was a "civilian airship" used mainly for weather research, which had been blown off course. China said it regretted its "unintended entry" into foreign airspace and would continue to communicate with American officials.

What's the difference between a satellite spying on us or this balloon except altitude and possibly loitering time?

First off, welcome to the DWS forum. The DWS is not an individual , incident by incident, warning site. What it does do, is monitor incidents that could lead up to a Nuclear incident, and bases it's DEFCON level on the seriousness of those. I have included the Director's latest status update.

There are currently no imminent nuclear threats at this time.

There are some signs that the United States is settling on a policy of nuclear ambiguity with Iran, allowing Iran to continue to develop its nuclear programme while not officially admitting to its existence. Meanwhile, the United Nations says Iran has enough highly enriched uranium to build several nuclear weapons. Iran has stated that any military action against it will be a declaration of war and it is to station warships in the Panama Canal, entering the Pacific Ocean for the first time.

The United States warns that weapons manufacturing and delivery is being stressed further by the ongoing war in Ukraine. The Center for Strategic and International Studies warns that the United States would likely run out of some munitions in less than one week in a Taiwan Strait conflict.

South Korea says that if North Korea’s nuclear threat grows, South Korea would consider nuclear weapons of its own or ask the U.S. to deploy nuclear weapons on its soil.
Japan reports that it would expand military assets on the Yaeyama Island chain off the east coast of Taiwan. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom and Japan sign an agreement which allows each country to deploy military units on each other’s soil.

Russia manufactures Poseidon nuclear-powered torpedo and will deliver them to Belgorod. United States says it will support the transfer of F-16s to Ukraine, but it will not send F-16s itself. However, NATO is sending heavier equipment to Ukraine, which Russia calls an escalation and evidence that NATO is a part of the war. Russia, for its part, has refused on-site inspections to verify compliance with New START treaty conditions.

Turkey says it is considering leaving NATO.
