The United States says an air strike in northwestern Syria has killed an al-Qaeda-affiliated leader who had ties to an ISIL (ISIS) member involved in a deadly ambush of US forces last month.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said on Saturday that an air strike a day earlier killed Bilal Hasan al-Jasim, who was “directly connected with the ISIS gunman who killed and injured American and Syrian personnel” in mid-December.

If your feeds have been screaming “Syria is popping off again,” this is why:

♦️Damascus vs. the SDF is back in a serious way The Syrian government is pushing to pull SDF held areas back under state control, and the SDF is resisting. Under the hood this is about territory, local governance, and control of key infrastructure and revenue. Especially in the east.

♦️This started with the Aleppo flare up, then shifted east After days of fighting in Aleppo earlier this month, a ceasefire took hold around Jan 10 and SDF fighters withdrew from the city. The calm didn’t “solve” anything, it just moved the pressure point to the Euphrates corridor.

♦️Damascus signaled escalation east of Aleppo Syrian authorities declared areas east of Aleppo a closed military zone, accusing the SDF of mobilizing and using the area as a staging ground. Including drone activity claims.

♦️The main action now is in the Euphrates corridor i.e Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor. Over the last 48 hours especially, Syrian government forces, plus allied Arab tribal elements, have made fast gains in Tabqa with control of key dam/air base area being the obvious leverage point.

♦️Deir ez-Zor: Reuters reports Syrian forces seized major oil/gas assets including the Omar oil field and Conoco gas field, which are core revenue sources.

♦️Reuters also reported clashes tied to a disputed “withdrawal line,” with U.S.-led coalition aircraft using warning flares as the front shifted.

♦️Civilian displacement and service disruption Humanitarian reporting describes large scale displacement from the Aleppo fighting, plus ongoing protection risks such as mines/UXO, disrupted services, and uncertainty around returns.

Syrian Government Announces a Ceasefire with the Kurdish-Led Syrian Democratic Forces

The Syrian government Sunday announced a ceasefire with the Syrian Democratic Forces, taking almost full control of the country and dismantling the Kurdish-led forces that controlled the northeast for over a decade.

Hours after the government announced the deal, SDF leader Mazloum Abdi confirmed it in a video statement, saying the group had accepted the agreement, which stipulates their withdrawal from Raqqa and Deir el-Zour provinces “to stop the bloodshed.”

Syria’s Defense Ministry said it ordered the fighting to halt on the front lines after the agreement was announced.

Kurdish outlet Rudaw, citing SDF spokesperson Farhad Shami, reports about 1,500 ISIS detainees escaped from Al-Shaddadi prison (Hasakah, Syria) amid heavy fighting on Jan 19, 2026. Other reporting confirms a prison break and that SDF temporarily lost control of the facility, but the “1,500” figure is not independently verified.

Russia has evacuated its Qamishli airbase in northern Syria.

Over the past two days, military equipment and heavy weapons have been transported from Qamishli to Khmeimim, a source in the Syrian security service told Reuters. Soon afterwards, Al-Monitor published a video of its correspondent filmed at the abandoned Russian base. The footage shows items left behind at the airport during the troops' withdrawal, as well as Russian flags fluttering over the communications tower.

On Sunday, Turkish President Erdogan warned Israel of consequences.

“Netanyahu is blinded by blood and hatred. Had Pakistan not been mediating in the war between the US and Iran, we would have shown Israel its place," Erdogan said in a speech at a political event in Turkey, as per a report in Israel Hayom.

He added, “Just as we entered Libya and Karabakh, we can enter Israel. There is no reason not to do it. It will require strength and unity.”

I'm not surprised by this statement, now that NATO is going to disappear in its current form.

I've already mentioned this possibility: Turkey invading Israel. I remind you that Turkey possesses a huge land army, second only to the US in NATO.

All accusations from the country who still won’t acknowledge the genocide they committed against the Armenians.
You're right, it happened during World War I. They also massacred the Greeks shortly afterwards, around the 1920s, but that doesn't excuse Benjamin Netanyahu. Edorgan is talking about one man, not the Jewish people.
