Australia & the Philippines are expanding defense cooperation, with eight Australian supported infrastructure projects underway across five Philippine military bases and a new Defence Cooperation Arrangement expected to be signed later in 2026.

The two sides are also expanding ISR cooperation, including Philippine support for Australia’s MC55A Peregrine, while pursuing an information sharing & secrecy agreement to enable closer cyber cooperation.

Australia & Japan integrated airborne and ground based battle management systems during Exercise Pitch Black 2026, linking an RAAF E7A Wedgetail, JASDF E2D Hawkeye and Australia’s 114 Mobile Control and Reporting Unit.

Sensor information was exchanged through data links to establish a common operational picture for coalition aircraft.

Australia & the Philippines called for regional arrangements providing affected states with advance notification of ICBM, SLBM and space launch vehicle launches, while encouraging greater use of transparency mechanisms including the Hague Code of Conduct.

The call follows China’s July 6th SLBM test from the South China Sea, which crossed over the Philippines into the Pacific.

The U.S. Missile Defense Agency awarded Raytheon a $745.387 million undefinitized contract action to manufacture SM3 Block IIA interceptors for the United States & Japan.

Japan provided $277.688 million in Foreign Military Sales funding at the time of the award. Work is scheduled for completion in February 2031.

Interceptor quantities, national allocations, unit prices and Japan’s delivery schedule were not disclosed.

A $46.09 million U.S. contract modification covers Joint Counter Radio Controlled IED Electronic Warfare systems, retrofit kits, spares & engineering support.

Australia provided $15.94 million, or 32% of the funding listed at the time of the award. Work is scheduled for completion in December 2028.

Australia’s system and retrofit quantities were not separately disclosed.

Japan began dispatching its 60th counter piracy aviation unit from JMSDF Atsugi, marking the first rotation to employ P1 patrol aircraft for counter piracy and Japan’s regional information gathering mission.

The aircraft is scheduled to replace the current P3C rotation in Djibouti during mid August.

Arrival in Djibouti and the start of operational sorties have not yet been confirmed.

Australia confirmed UAS activity occurred over multiple days in July around Newcastle Airport and the located RAAF Base Williamtown.

The number of drones, operational impact & any counter UAS response were withheld on security grounds. New South Wales Police completed an investigation, but no operator, motive, charge or conclusion was disclosed.

Six Russian Tarantul III guided missile patrol boats and an Amga class missile support ship transited eastward through the Soya Strait in two groups.

Japan monitored the movement with JMSDF vessels and a P3C patrol aircraft. No territorial water violation, live fire, declared exercise, destination or mission was reported.

Australia & Vietnam agreed to an updated Joint Vision Statement on Further Defence Cooperation covering personnel training, service level cooperation, information sharing, peacekeeping, maritime security, search and rescue, military medicine & counterterrorism.

Their border agencies also signed memoranda concerning transnational crime, border protection and maritime cooperation.

The agreements create no mutual defense obligation, reciprocal access arrangement, basing rights, assigned forces or new exercise schedule.

UPDATE: Japan disclosed a second Russian IL-20 intelligence collection sortie along essentially the same Sea of Japan route in two days. The aircraft flew southwest from the continental direction, turned off Kyoto Prefecture and returned north toward the continent. Japan scrambled fighters in response. No airspace violation was reported.

Australia & the United States tested AUKUS Pillar II subsea and seabed warfare capabilities off Hawaii during RIMPAC 2026, using mission scenarios focused on protecting critical undersea infrastructure.

A HUGIN Superior autonomous underwater vehicle and Schilling work class remotely operated vehicle conducted a complex navigation and search task. The Lightfish Seasat uncrewed surface vessel and Rock Lobster underwater acoustic relay also demonstrated interoperability with U.S. underwater communications technology.
