The British and U.S. navies have successfully launched an American Mk48 heavyweight torpedo from Britain’s autonomous, uncrewed XV Excalibur submarine during joint trials at the BUTEC testing range in Scotland. The trials focused on integrating weapon systems with large uncrewed underwater platforms, a capability intended to expand the future strike potential of allied naval forces. XV Excalibur was developed by MSubs and first unveiled in 2025. The large autonomous underwater vehicle is approximately 12 meters long, 2 meters wide and displaces around 19 tons.

Successfully integrating a heavyweight torpedo with an autonomous underwater platform is an important step toward armed uncrewed submarines operating alongside conventional fleets. Such systems could eventually expand underwater surveillance and strike capacity without requiring crews aboard every platform.
