Trump's Tariff's - Updates

Rates in question that Trump lied about are *averages* across all goods hence the term *rate average* on tarrifs. Not looking at one specific item.
The chart you posted didn't say "averages" or "rate average". I was only going by what you posted.

Of course, the demorats and rinios are going to kill this. They want your money and just dowl out a little to you in the spring depending on your tax bracket. Sad really.

Oh man, the communist voting bloc really hammered you… good! It means you are right. Very right.

Perplexing is the 29% tariff on goods from Norfolk Island that effectively has no industry. It is an island in the pacific that mostly relies on tourism. It is a protectorate of Queensland nowadays that is effectively a state of Australia. It effectively has no real exports. It does not even have a port or jetty that transport ships can dock with.

Then there is Herd and McQuarie Islands. I heard a comment that residents of these islands have voted for a 10,000% tariff on all US imports and attack of all US citizens when they arrive on the islands.

We are just waiting to see how long before everyone realises this is a joke as these Islands are nature reserves and have no residents other than penguins and other wildlife although if you have seen Madagascar you have to realise how dangerous the penguins are.
I heard penguin shit is in high demand these days

I thought I read rate average in the photo.
So the Administration came out (finally) and said how they calculated the rate.

According to a statement from the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), the tariffs are calculated using a straightforward formula based on each country’s goods trade surplus with the United States. Specifically, the method divides a country’s trade surplus by its total exports to the U.S., then applies a 50 percent discount to the resulting percentage.

For example, China exported $438 billion in goods to the U.S. in 2024 and ran a trade surplus of $295 billion, according to Census Bureau data. That yields a surplus ratio of 67.4 percent, and after halving that figure, the U.S. imposed a 34 percent reciprocal tariff rate.

.. that doesn't make much sense.
Imagine a theoretical country that imports $100B of goods from the US, but exports back $200B. That's a surplus ratio of 100%. Consider that this country does NOT charge the US any tariffs, they would still have to pay 50% tariffs? That goes against the principles of a free market and echoes a protectionist stance economically, which is typically followed by communist countries.

It doesn’t matter what a nation produces. These are a reflection of what they charge the USA.

I got one, am tired of of getting taken advantage of by the rest of the world. If you want no tariffs from the US then charge no tariffs to the US.
In case you are not aware there is a thing called free trade that is what Australia supports. There was 0% tarrifagainst US goods and the US returns with a 10% tariff. If trurly recipricol should be 0. This was not the action of a friend or ally. The reaction in Australia is quite surprising with a backlash to reconsider all dealings with the USA. The CCP is rubbing their hands with glee as this is being more effective in pushing nations and Island States towards China more effectively than anything China could have done.

There is currently an election run up in Australia and the attitude towards the USA has changed dramatically. It is surprising but there have been political party leaders who have publicly said the USA is not a friend anymore and all agreements including defense need to be reconsidered. There have even been comments made about cancelling leases and closing facilities such as Pine Gap and North West Cape. There is and increase in anger towards the USA that has even had politicians pushing for more relations with China.

Will be interesting to see what happens with the USA-Australia relationship.

That actually is not true. Australia does charge the US on some goods, plus there is GST. So it isn't 0%.

I'm not arguing that the US is doing right or wrong. I don't know. This is beyond me.

So it’s still maintained that it’s perfectly acceptable to maintain tariffs of US goods for other countries.
But some how it’s a betrayal for the US to reciprocate or expect actual free trade.
Got it, good to know who our friends are.

If you have to protect the economic productivity of your nation with tariffs. That means either your economic production is not competitive or you simply want to maintain an economic advantage at others expense.

The only people who profit from tariffs are isolated industries, politicians who keep tariffs in place and lastly and most lucratively international corporations and bankers who take advantage of poorly regulated poorly treated laborers, and banks who profit off this system.

So if it means loosing friends at the expense of diminishing job market in the states due to import restrictions to world markets. Is that really how friends treat friends.

I have no issue buying and Irish wool sweater at twice the cost due to quality or a waxed canvas anrorak from Poland. The quantity deserves the price. That is a free trade world we’re supposed to live in.

All I’ve read are threats about trade wars and losing friends. No explanation as to why it’s ok for nations to use tariffs and not for others.
Other than the issue of the dollars historic purchasing power which is real I know.
The issue of the cost of interest on the trade deficit to the US likely offsets any relative advantage the purchasing value of dollar has.

maybe France Britain and Australia want to police the pirate attacks in the gulf of Arabia and Red Sea and Australia and contained Iran as well. Australia and India can build a navy to confront Chinas growing fleet in the South China Sea or just let all that trade that passes thru their be relegated to the capricious whims of the CCP. It’s an interconnected world or it’s a world of self interest.
Europe wants Russia repelled in Ukraine.
Then maybe they might meet their defense commitments and do it themselves. And the US can save all that expenditure on continental defense.
I give it twenty years before another major conflict breaks out in Europe. Same for the South China Sea.

If as some here claim the US markets are disposable. Then have at it, you also have to pick up much of that cost in enforcing sea lanes.

As noted by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, all of the global trade partners would do themselves a favor if they did not react emotionally with increased countervailing duties.

The currently outlined U.S. reciprocal tariffs represent a ceiling amount levied. The goal is to lower the tariffs to zero by eliminating all trade barriers. If the EU raises their baseline tariffs, the only thing that happens is the U.S. side increases at the same proportion.
