President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on May 20 said the National Intelligence Organization (MİT) has warned of an assassination plot against him.

“The reason I am here [now] is that I received this intelligence,” Erdoğan told reporters in Sarajevo, speaking alongside his Bosnian counterpart.

“Such threats and operations will not stop us from going forward. We will continue on our path,” he added.

Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdağ had on May 19 warned of possible “assassination threats” against Erdoğan during his visit to Bosnia on May 20.

Interesting, I am not one for death, but douse anyone know who would take his place? Anyone better?... Or would there be another "mini civil war".

Speaking of the current attempt could this lead to another conflict from within Turkey again if it was say a opposition group was found guilty of this...
 
The Turkish Lira extended its relentless tumble on May 21, sliding more than 2 percent against the dollar, hit by a surging greenback and concerns about the Central Bank’s ability to rein in double-digit inflation.

The lira has lost 17 percent so far this year, making it one of the worst-performing emerging market currencies.

“This is driven by a global environment that is continuing to deteriorate, characterized by higher U.S. Treasury yields and a stronger dollar,” said İnan Demir, senior emerging economist at Nomura International, as quoted by Reuters on May 21.

“The situation was exacerbated by the [President Recep Tayyip] Erdoğan speech last week in London and the fact that the Central Bank seems unable to act to stop the currency weakness.”

The lira traded at 4.5920 against the dollar by 1238 GMT, having touched a record low of 4.5933 earlier.

The lira also hit record lows against the euro and the yen and Turkey's dollar-denominated bonds tumbled.

Annual inflation stood at 10.85 percent in April, and it has been as high as 12.98 percent in recent months.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan called on Turkey's citizens on May 26 to convert their dollar and
euro savings into lira, as he sought to bolster the ailing currency which has lost some 20 percent of its value against the U.S. currency this year.

"My brothers who have dollars or euros under their pillow. Go and convert your money into lira. We will thwart this game together," Erdoğan said at a rally in the eastern Erzurum province ahead of parliamentary and presidential elections on June 24.

Turkey and Russia have reached a retroactive agreement for a 10.25 percent discount on the natural gas Ankara buys from Moscow, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on My 26.

Speaking at an election rally in eastern Turkey's Erzurum, Erdoğan said a $1 billion payment will be made to Turkey under the deal, which followed a Turkish request for a discount on gas first made in 2015.

Turkey had gone to arbitration after its request was not met, Erdoğan said.

"After long talks, we reached agreement on a 10.25 percent price discount on the natural gas we receive from Russia, covering the years 2015 and 2016," he said.

"With the agreement which we have reached, a payment of $1 billion will be made to our country to cover the discount for the natural gas we received in those two years," he added.

Speaking to private broadcaster A Haber following his visit to Europe, Çavuşoğlu answered questions on Turkey’s foreign policy.

When talking about the recent plunge of the Turkish Lira, Çavuşoğlu argued that the crisis stems from an organized campaign, which he alleged to have been masterminded abroad.

“When it is time, we will announce [the details]. See how the credit rating agencies decrease their ratings?” the foreign minister asked, referring to Moody’s recent decision that slashed forecasts for Turkey’s economic growth, citing deepening market pressure and growing risks.

“They began working on how they could demolish Turkey through its economy after the July 15 coup attempt failed. We have managed to repel these attacks with minimum damage by taking precautions,” Çavuşoğlu said.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has once again claimed that dark foreign powers are trying to “manipulate” the Turkish economy by “playing on currencies,” vowing to “settle the score” with them after the June 24 snap elections.


“Turkey’s economy, in all areas, is now far beyond developed countries,” Erdoğan said at a rally in the province of Sakarya on June 5.

The volume of the country’s exports was $36 billion in 2002 when the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) first came to the power but it has now reached $162 billion, he stated.

Annual inflation in Turkey surged to over 15 percent in June for the first time in almost one-and-a-half decades, according to official data, driving the embattled Turkish currency down amid a vicious circle of a weakening lira and rising inflation

The highest monthly increase was 5.98 percent in food and non-alcoholic beverages, followed by communication by 4.76 percent and transportation by 2.66 percent.
