Hey at least it wasn't bought by the Chinese.

Im all for it. We seized Bayer from Germany in WW1, sold it to Americans and it operated separately for over 100 years till the German Bayer bought it back, which is actually paying the US twice for dame thing, which we will seize all over again if the Germans were to turn on US. Same with Japanese or even Chinese, they can’t take it with them if they war with US.

So someone is going to own it, but not really possess it. Im ok with balancing the trade imbalance even if just a little. Besides closer links with Japan at that level will make it harder for them to turn on US when China attacks but offers Japan an out. Literally an “out “ and not a treasonous betrayal like some books portray. Just a simple drag your ass, don't enter major combat, and we will leave you alone after we conquer the world.

Or something lesser, yeah. A less evil we are going to conquer the world type a thing and more just the ambassador tapping at a conveniently placed globe and drumming his nicotine stain finger twixt the Yellow Sea and the Sea of Japan…….

I’m mixed I don’t like US corps being bought by foreign nations. In the current environment though Japan would be my least worrisome nation of choice.
The frustration is that there is not the capital or business energy in the US to maintain ownership.

If push comes to shove, and national security does become a concern for foreign-owned enterprises with significant operating presence in the US, economic sanctions might be a path that can be used to prevent the foreign owner from benefiting economically. I offer the CITGO case as support, which is primarily owned by the Venezuelan state-owned oil company. Venezuela does not benefit from sale of CITGO gasoline in the US as a result of sanctions.

Ultimately, Japan is a close ally so I am not too concerned about Japanese ownership of US Steel. (Sure it does bruise some US ego, but it is not seriously destabilizing or weakening.) But to @Friendly Engineer 's point, I am not sure I would have liked a sale to a Chinese owner.
