U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff says he and Jared Kushner will travel to Moscow on Thursday, Jan. 22, for talks with Vladimir Putin. Witkoff told CNBC the meeting was requested by the Russian side. The Kremlin says a Witkoff meeting is on Putin’s schedule.

German federal prosecutors say a German Ukrainian citizen was arrested in Berlin on 21 Jan 2026 on suspicion of acting as an agent for a Russian intelligence service. Prosecutors allege she supplied Ukraine war related info, including arms industry sites, drone tests, and planned drone deliveries to Ukraine. Searches also carried out in Havelland (Brandenburg), Ahrweiler (Rhineland Palatinate) and Munich tied to two additional suspects.

This morning, the French Navy boarded an oil tanker coming from Russia, subject to international sanctions and suspected of flying a false flag.

The operation was conducted on the high seas in the Mediterranean, with the support of several of our allies. It was carried out in strict compliance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

A judicial investigation has been opened. The vessel has been diverted.

We are determined to uphold international law and to ensure the effective enforcement of sanctions.

The activities of the “shadow fleet” contribute to financing the war of aggression against Ukraine.

Polish media outlets report that CIA director John Ratcliffe made an undisclosed visit to Poland earlier this week, meeting with the Defense Minister and the head of Polish intelligence services.

The topic of discussion was not disclosed "at the request of the American side".

European media and politicians are reacting with outrage to Trump's yesterday's statement concerning NATO partners "We’ve never needed them. We have never really asked anything of them. You know, they’ll say they sent some troops to Afghanistan, or this or that. And they did – they stayed a little back, a little off the front lines." This is headline news in nearly all major media outlets throughout Europe.

Of the approximately 3,500 allied troops that died in the conflict slightly less than 2,500 were Americans. The UK lost 457 soldiers, while Denmark, with a population of around 5 million, lost more than 40 (a higher percentage per capita than the US).

Other members of the Trump administration have also made light of the sacrifices made by NATO allies in Afghanistan. In June, SECDEF Pete Hegseth joked that the ISAF acronym on their shoulder patches stood for "I Saw Americans Fighting."

US, Ukraine and Russia in first trilateral talks of the war​

Ukrainian, United States and Russian negotiators began talks in the United Arab Emirates on Friday, marking the first known meeting to be attended by all three countries since Moscow’s full-scale invasion in 2022.

Moscow’s longstanding maximalist demands include Ukraine surrendering the entirety of these four regions, which it has annexed but not fully conquered.

Meetings will also take place on Saturday “if needed,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Friday.
