I honestly have no clue why Russia would accept this deal.
Influential basketball player Brittney Griner and "convicted" "spy" Paul Whelan for some random arms dealer?

Bout is not "some random arms dealer", and calling Griner "influential" is debatable, to put it mildly. We're playing geopolitics here, not basketball. In this particular game Bout is a heavyweight while Griner is a nobody.

I, for one, am puzzled why the Russians aren't biting. They've been trying to get Bout back for ages. It would also send a powerful message of support to any other would-be Russian agents.
