There are a thousand variables which determine what the DEFCON level is. Generally, we can not say if a certain event activates a certain DEFCON level. It usually is couched in "if <X> event happens along with <Y> and <Z> but compared to <A> and <B>, then..." You get the picture.

The only hard and fast rule we have is nuclear use. That is an automatic DEFCON 1. Hopefully, we'll be ahead of the game there, but sometimes -- especially with non-State actors -- these things can come out of the blue.

The question remains how they will deal with partisan activity that will likely happen during and after the polls. Still not convinced Russia might be wanting to use nukes to protect recently annexed territory in "self-defense"-uses, but rather as a new method to try to intimidate the West to not support Ukraine as much, seeing as the whole energy tactic has started to fail.

I’m sure they don’t want to use nukes. But, if Putin declares annexed territory to be part of Russia, then he could consider the use of nukes as protecting the Motherland.

Putin might have that view, but the question is if other generals and staff want to risk nuke usage in defending land they recently just conquered.

Putin doesn't need anyone's approval to launch nukes. Well there are two people he needs approval from. BUT he can replace them with yes men in a second who will do the order. OR he can simply remove those two positions and give it to himself giving him soul authority. This is in the Russian constitution.

Still takes the men operating the launchers to execute.

Yes he need approval from his left and right hand man in the government. But Putin can replace them or outright remove the positions and give the authority to himself.

Until there commander comes in with a gun behind their head to force them to carry our the orders. You see how they shoot their own kind in the back for desertion. You shouldn't have to imagine hard what happens to you if you disobey a order directly from Putin.

Ok your way to overly optimistic and need a reality check on how things are in Russia. There are possibly hundreds of sites and soldiers with nuclear weapons. So sure maybe 1 is willing to let himself and his family die in Russian prisons for disobeying.

But that's not how things work or reality. The Russian military will follow its orders, to not follow orders means torture and death for you an your family. None will risk it.

I’m sure they don’t really want to either. However, one of the objectives of the actions they appear to be taking could be to lay the ground work, sort of put the option to use WMD on the menu. I think that’s just one of several possible objectives.

Not trying to be mean. But love and peace is not what in the minds of Russian soldiers. Its obey or die. Basic survival mentality.

Disobeying orders is a death sentence for you and possibly your family in Russia.

Fear of disobedience is likly much larger then ones fear of shooting off a couple low yield NON strategic nuclear weapons.
