So partial mobilization. So does this mean we're partially screwed?
In my opinion that means, things are getting more complicated. A partial mobilization could be a Step to full mobilization. The Russians did never go all in at once because of their bureaucracy.
Definitely a step in the wrong direction, but foreseeable

Yes is the simple answer, those annexations wont be recognized as Russian lands, so Ukraine wont be told to stop. ( As they would if they crossed the recognized borders )
Either someone in the Russian Leadership wants a faster pace, or it is an attempt to see if someone cooks something up the Russian can use or havent thought about so they have more options. ( like in the other bluff instances )

If they declare full mobilisation later today, all neighboring contries have to do at least a partial mobilisation. Its the last big wheel for a contry that prepares for a major war, and takes time to effectively start up ( so we wont see its effect until next year ) Something else I have thought about and not been brought up, is the Alliance Defence system Russia has with its allies. People focus on the nuke use, and full mobilisation, but havent realized that Russia can also claim that they are being attacked so their allies need to come help ( Mainly addressed to China ) What will happen if they dont Fully mobilise but call on China? Will China then send a million "voluntiers"? and alot of other questions will present itself,
The friendship and cooperation treaty between Russia and China is not a clear cut mutual defense treaty.
It is like NATO’s treaty with no article 5.
If one is attacked well then they will talk.
Not saying China wouldn’t support them in some way. But theirs is not a trip wire alliance. More of a work together alliance.

I didn't expect it. I expected the 2 referendums, Russia which does not recognize them, but reserving itself to do so, then a winter pause and a kind of "Misk 3" stallmate.

Actually it is a well known and internationally excepted fact that any attack on Russia results in ww3. But hey call the bluff. Might aswell shit nato hasn't yet? This could have been over by now if no-one believed it. But hey a few lives equal more dollars. 🤫🤔😒🙄😤🤬🤝👍
Yes an attack on what are the accepted boarders of russia would be.
But the annexed territories are not that.
Fewer than five nations in the world have recognized the breakaway regions as that including Crimea.
Call it so does not make it so.
And China and Russia do not have a binding defense treaty. They have a diplomatic and economic treaty.
There is no binding agreement in it for one or the other to go to each other’s aid.

To be honest I was taking the piss about China militarily support Russia. As far as Russia claims go for territory claims this is what they want for an excuse to escalate and finish. They don't care who recognises what. But atleast we will find outcome sooner than later.🤝👍

Yeah China ( or other ally ) would also need to recognise these regions as Russian before such help could be sent ( But I guess they had that discussion at the last meeting )

I don’t see an escalation in this.
Annexing these territories are a artificial line drawn on the map to try and legitimize cease fire lines being drawn there.

Who know the votes from them might be legitimate. But we will never be able to know that for sure will we.
Seems voting is getting as sketchy as polling. Who know if you can believe election results

300k out of around 20 million is like 1.5% of all Russian males that enlisted for the last 10-15 years I see alot of influencers and media trolls claiming that they cant do anything with those men ( they have not really a clue, they are just parroting each other )

300k is a lot though. However it's gonna be "interesting" to see how they'll stuff 300k soldiers with equipment they don't really have. This isn't 40k, you can't just win with sheer numbers. I honestly feel bad for the soldiers who know all they are is a meat shield.

In ww2 Soviet Union had alot of old and under equipped troops, they streamlined their production to overcome it ( as they are going to now ) It will take time yes, but time is actually on Russias side atm for its goal. ( if nothing new happens that will bring NATO into the conflict ) This is gonna end either by Putin gone with new leadership that isnt nationalistic, or both sides get tired ( Korean style )

As first they need to equip and train the Soldiers. So they have to freeze the War for now. Strategically is this good for Russia, they can use the Winter for Training. The actual Recruits might be ready in Springtime next Year plus Putin gave the Order for higher production rates in the Russian Industries.

And then Putin can escalate the complete next year to the Point of full mobilization. Personally I don't think, that the Russians are out for negotiations or stalemates. And if they offer, it would be a deception or an distraction. This War wasn't planned in two weeks, but certainly for Years or even Decades.

The mobilization is not a "freezing" move. If the idea is to make a stalemate and to extend the duration of the war, freezing is the right way in order to make a kind of "Minsk 3" armed peace agreement. If the idea is to win this operation, the freezing is not good, because it will give time to Ukraine to organize itself and having more time helps who is on the defensive.

Well to be honest I'm a little confused on the concern of anything Putin does considering he will lose and his military is weak and useless. That seems to be majority belief yet this reaction is what? Surely no need. Than again it has been quiet lately I guess. Still very confusing. Please feel free to explain how the west could lose?

The Russian army appears to be weaker than had been believed, but their nuclear threat is still credible (as far as we know).

True but really? C-mon his threat isn't new and no-one took it seriously before. What changed?
Maybe nothing has changed. I suppose what I meant really was that while the Russian army appears weakened, as far as we know their nuclear weapons still work.

In terms of this latest threat, I don’t know how meaningful it is. It comes directly from Putin rather than one of his many mouthpieces, so that is different.

Also with these planned referendums, he is setting the stage to be able to claim Russia itself needs to be defended, thereby justifying any escalation he chooses, including nuclear use. Doesn’t mean it will happen, but I think this is a key change from what has been the status quo of the last few months.

Give them a lasgun rifle and the emperor's faith and they will overcome any foe. (I hope you were referring to Warhammer 40k)

😃

So if losses are so Earth Shatteringly Light, why do you need to mobilize 300,000?
If you don't have enough soldiers to control 2000 km of a front-line and you are forced to use a light infantry (such as National Guard) instead, then it is fully reasonable to mobilize 300,000 soldiers or even more (who knows). And to start deep offensive operations in the next 2 months.
