Specifically European tax payers are paying for it rather than Americans. Which circles back to the intent Eisenhower was getting at.While Washington complains about the financial cost of NATO, the alliance is actually an incredible cash cow for the American military industry (the military-industrial complex). Europeans buy massively "American," which creates a massive and very profitable return on investment for the United States.
That's the real reason.
The funny thing is though. In 1955 the US total federal expenditures on defense was 63% of the budget. In 2025 it is hovering around 13%.
Europe was 13-15% of budget on defense in 55, in 2025 it was still only approaching 3.4%. Which is only slightly more than a 1% increase over the last twenty years.
And everyone is shocked and appalled the US is drawing down our military in Europe.
