Aircraft near drone was loaded with ammunition

August 6, 2026 // 12:04

Leipzig/Halle Airport may have narrowly escaped a catastrophe: According to information from WDR, NDR, and SZ, the Ukrainian cargo plane in which's vicinity a drone carrying explosives was discovered, was loaded with ammunition.
(novaB - annotation: NDR and WDR are part of the public service broadcasting conglomerate ARD; the "Süddeutsche Zeitung" is a reknowed newspaper that works together with the ARD in investigative journalism, they are abbreviated as "SZ".)

Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt speaks of a "new level of threat" and a "hybrid attack scenario": Overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday, a drone with an attached explosive device was found at Leipzig/Halle Airport. Forensic investigations revealed that the device apparently contained military-grade high-explosive substances.

It remains unclear who is responsible for the suspected attack attempt. The drone was located near cargo planes belonging to a Ukrainian airline. Leipzig Airport also handles military transport operations for NATO.
WDR, NDR, and the SZ have obtained new details regarding the incident: According to a confidential police report, one of the Antonov cargo planes, near which the explosive-laden drone was found, was loaded with military ammunition that had apparently been transported from France to Leipzig shortly before and was likely intended for onward transport.

"Contact between drone and employee"

According to investigating authorities, airport staff spotted a drone last Tuesday evening at approximately 11:42 p.m. as it was "hovering" above the ground between two Antonov cargo aircraft belonging to the Ukrainian state-owned carrier Antonov Airlines.
The official report states that subsequently a "contact between the drone and an employee" occurred. The drone was later found lying on the ground. A drone defense system, apparently in place at Leipzig/Halle Airport, had failed to detect the flying object beforehand. On Wednesday evening, Federal Interior Minister Dobrindt stated that the perpetrators had likely modified the drone to be able to specifically bypass defense systems.

Surveillance camera footage analyzed

According to information from WDR, NDR, and SZ, investigators have now been able to analyze surveillance camera footage from the airport. A review of footage from the security control center (the airport's central monitoring and coordination hub) reportedly revealed that the drone had apparently entered the airport grounds from the south at 7:28 p.m. and subsequently landed on the apron.
The video footage reportedly shows no further takeoff by the drone. However, the drone was apparently hovering at a low altitude between parked Ukrainian cargo planes several hours later when it was spotted by an airport employee.
According to the Ministry of Defense, no Bundeswehr military transport operations were taking place at the airport at the time in question (novaB: "Bundeswehr" = the armed forces of Germany). Leipzig/Halle Airport is generally considered a key military hub and logistics point. Authorities report that Ukraine has also been using the airport as an alternative site for transporting military supplies since the war began in February 2022.

Aircraft collided with an object

Air traffic was temporarily suspended following the discovery of the suspicious drone. As a result, a DHL cargo plane arriving from Marseille, which was in the process of landing, was forced to abort its approach and perform a go around. According to internal official reports, the aircraft collided with an object at a speed of approximately 500 km/h while passing the airport perimeter fence.
The object involved may have been another drone. The DHL aircraft - which investigators believe was carrying hazardous materials - was able to continue its flight and was diverted to Hannover-Langenhagen Airport.
Experts identified damage to the front section of the aircraft. According to reports by WDR, NDR, and SZ, a "biological swab" was taken and returned a negative result, making a bird strike unlikely. The empennage of the aircraft reportedly sustained damage during the collision as well.

Flight data recorder to be analyzed

The crew members have since been questioned by the Saxony State Office of Criminal Investigation (LKA) and the aircraft is slated for further forensic examination. Among other things, the flight recorder is to be analyzed.
However, the investigation remains focused primarily on the drone rigged with explosives. The bomb squad of the Saxony LKA succeeded in removing the detonator to allow for further examination of the drone. A package of explosives, roughly the size of a fist, had reportedly been attached to the drone. Multiple tests on the substance indicated that it is likely Semtex - an explosive used in both military and industrial applications.

Two SIM cards and a can of food. That’s what investigators now say was inside the explosive drone found at Leipzig/Halle Airport and the details make the incident even more unsettling.
German authorities report the drone carried two SIM cards for redundant remote control, a canned‑food container repurposed as an explosive charge, custom wiring and mounts designed to bypass airport security systems.
This wasn't a toy. It was a cheap, low‑signature weapon, engineered to look harmless and stay controllable even under signal disruption.
Investigators now say the setup suggests professional planning, not hobbyists and that someone was testing how close they can get to a NATO logistics hub without detection.

@william: Yes, in the first two reports I have posted there already was the Interior Minister saying that this wasn't amateur's work and he was vaguely hinting at preparations on the drone that were made to bypass security systems, so it's interesting to read in your post about the details of that.

And now we have the next drone incident in Germany, although this time (to translate a german phrase) "one number smaller":

North Rhine-Westphalia: Suspicious drone flight over "Patriot shipyard"

August 7, 2026 • 5:02 PM

Mechernich is home to a key Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces) site where "Patriot" air defense systems undergo repairs. According to reports by WDR, NDR, and the SZ, drones were observed flying over the barracks during the night.

Mechernich is located on the edge of the Eifel region, southwest of Bonn. It's home to an important Bundeswehr facility: a highly secure material depot situated in an underground complex 130 meters below ground. On an area of 30,000 square meters equipment and spare parts for the armed forces' military hardware are stored here. It is a key hub of Bundeswehr logistics.
And that is not all: the Bundeswehr specialists responsible for the maintenance and repair of the "Patriot" air defense system also work here. Known among the troops as the "Patriot Shipyard," the facility is arguably the only one of its kind in Europe.
According to reports by WDR, NDR, and the SZ, recent drone overflights above the site are causing particular alarm among security authorities: it was reported that security personnel observed a total of six drone overflights between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. on the night leading into Friday.

Police officers reportedly on site

During the most recent sighting, police officers from the Euskirchen district police authority, who had already been alerted, were reportedly on the scene and witnessed at least one flyover themselves. One drone is said to have even circled briefly above the police personnel. This information comes from a confidential police report.
According to the report, military police personnel from the Bundeswehr also observed the activity from a distance of approximately 40 meters. Their initial assessment, as stated in the report, suggests the drone may have been a "Fly-380 VTOL" model. These drones have a wingspan of around 3.8 meters and a range of up to 400 kilometers. They can reach speeds of up to 150 km/h and are capable of carrying a payload of more than ten kilograms.

Circumstances Unclear

It is unclear who is responsible for the drone flights over Mechernich. Drones of this type are used for tasks such as surveying and mapping, as well as for border surveillance and transport in hard-to-reach areas. Investigations to date involving the North Rhine-Westphalia State Criminal Police Office and federal security agencies have reportedly yielded no evidence suggesting the incident involved a stray surveying drone.
Police are investigating on suspicion of "unauthorized imaging of military installations, defense assets, or sensitive areas that could compromise security". The Military Counterintelligence Service and the Joint Counter-Drone Center in Berlin are also involved in the matter.
"We can confirm the drone sighting you inquired about," a spokesperson for the Bundeswehr’s Operational Command stated in response to a request. A total of two drones were reportedly sighted. "We ask for your understanding that we cannot comment further on ongoing investigations."

Repeated Overflights of Military Facilities

In recent years, there have been numerous instances of suspicious drone overflights above military facilities in Germany, including naval bases on the North and Baltic Seas and sites where Ukrainian soldiers were undergoing training. Security authorities suspect that Russian state entities or hired "disposable agents" could be responsible for some of these incidents. Experts believe the aim may be to conduct reconnaissance on military and other critical infrastructure, possibly in preparation for acts of sabotage.
In April 2025, a soldier at a base near Emden observed several men who appeared to be flying drones. This Bundeswehr site is also considered highly sensitive: the area houses antenna masts with over 350 meters of heigth that are used to transmit encrypted commands to submarines. When the guard soldier addressed the men, they reportedly shouted something at him in Russian and then drove off in a van. The individuals have not been identified to this day.
As reported by WDR and NDR, several drones were sighted in December 2025 over the site of the new "Arrow 3" air defense system in the Annaburger Heide, in the border region between Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt. They had been detected by a surveillance system. Bundeswehr soldiers subsequently used an assault rifle equipped with special targeting optics against the drones but failed to hit any of them.
