Russia plans to hold drills simulating the use of tactical nuclear weapons, the Defense Ministry announced Monday, days after the Kremlin reacted angrily to comments by senior Western officials about the war in Ukraine.
The drills are in response to “provocative statements and threats of certain Western officials regarding the Russian Federation,” the Defense Ministry said in a statement.
It was the first time that Russia has publicly announced drills involving tactical nuclear weapons, though its strategic nuclear forces regularly hold exercises. Tactical nuclear weapons have a lower yield compared to massive warheads that arm intercontinental ballistic missiles intended to obliterate entire cities.

In the Black Sea, Russian forces spotted a Ukrainian USV armed with a twin rail launcher for R-73 all-aspect IR homing air-to-air missiles.Based on the footage, some Ukrainian USVs now possess a nascent SAM capability, likely able to target low and slow Russian helicopters.

By taking out the power, the Kremlin’s forces aim to rob Ukrainian manufacturing of its energy supply, especially military plants, and crush public morale.
The mass barrages also drain Ukrainian air defenses of ammunition as Kyiv’s depleted forces await delivery of the latest batch of promised Western military support. Ukrainian officials have been pleading for more NATO-standard air defense systems, such as Patriots.

Ukraine’s parliament has passed a bill that would enable some prisoners to fight in the armed forces as the military faces a critical personnel shortage and Russian forces continue to advance on the battlefield.
The move on Wednesday marks a U-turn in Ukraine’s approach on the matter. Kyiv had long opposed the measure and had repeatedly criticised Moscow for mobilising prisoners to fill its ranks.

“Possibilities for the first use of nuclear weapons are clearly stated in the military doctrine and in the fundamentals of state policy in the area of nuclear deterrence. At the moment, there are no changes with regard to this,” Ryabkov said, according to comments reported by news agency RIA Novosti and translated by NBC News.

“But the situation itself is changing, so how the basic documents in this area relate to the needs of ensuring our security is the subject of constant analysis,” he said.

“We warn our opponents that their escalatory course, of course, confronts us with the need to take steps that actually mean strengthening measures of deterrence,” he added.

The Russian Armed Forces have reportedly launched a Major Offensive Operation against the Kharkiv Region of Northeastern Ukraine, with Armored Columns and Mechanized Infantry supported by Heavy Artillery and Tactical-Combat Aircraft having Crossed the Ukrainian Border from the Belgorod Region of Western Russian along multiple Routes. Significant Ukrainian Reserve Elements are being Rushed to the Region in an attempt to Halt the Advance; however, according to Ukrainian Sources the Russians have managed to Establish several Bridgeheads into the Region, with Ukrainian Defenders initially suffering Considerable Casualties due to the “Surprise Nature” of the Offensive.
