🔊 The long-running Russia-Ukraine war appears to have entered a new phase after major developments over the weekend and ahead of a crunch NATO summit.

In the last 72 hours, U.S. President Donald Trump purportedly held separate calls with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukrainian drones struck an oil terminal and port in St. Petersburg and the surrounding area and Russia launched its second large-scale attack on Kyiv in less than a week.

Poland’s Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz announced Monday that several thousand U.S. Soldiers will arrive in Poland within the coming weeks, as the United States has committed to resuming its rotation of combat forces on NATO’s Eastern Front. This announcement comes amid reports that Russia is preparing to carry out “armed provocations” against Poland and other countries in Eastern Europe, in an effort to test NATO’s resolve on the defense of its allies and support for Ukraine.

Yesterday, Peskov said: this is no longer a "special military operation" - it is a war.

This statement by an official is yet another step toward a future mobilization in Russia.
What could happen if war is officially declared instead of a "special military operation" ("SMO")?
Instead of partial measures, Russia would launch a mechanism for general (total) mobilization and introduce martial law:
Putin would have to issue a decree introducing martial law and submit a bill to the Federation Council and the State Duma declaring a state of war.
The country's borders would be automatically and completely closed to all citizens liable for military duty, preventing them from leaving the country. Unlike the "SMO," where the focus is on people with combat experience and in-demand military specialties, a general mobilization would call up all categories of citizens in the reserve.
Another indirect indication of preparations for a total mobilization is yesterday's news that the Russian defense ministry intends to abolish mandatory medical examinations for contract soldiers and those mobilized to determine their fitness for service. The ministry has already prepared the relevant amendments to the law on military service.Abolishing military medical examinations would introduce a "presumption of absolute fitness" for everyone subject to mobilization. This would make it possible to mobilize large numbers of Russians and send them to the front lines as quickly as possible.

President Zelenskyy at the NATO Summit in Ankara:

We are now eliminating around 30,000 Russian soldiers every month.

Just imagine that scale. In June alone, nearly 28,000 Russian soldiers were eliminated, and we have video confirmation for every single one of them. The overwhelming majority were struck by drones. And frankly, we take no pride in this.

We are saying this to show what modern war looks like - a war we did not start, but one we are forced to fight.

Peskov: Russia achieves its goals on the battlefield and without nuclear escalation

The Kremlin representative called speculation the reasoning that Russia will allegedly have to use tactical nuclear weapons sooner or later.

"We may well continue the [military] operation and achieve successful results for us without it. And we do it," the Kremlin representative emphasized.
