Literally speaking there's a big difference between HIMARS and light weaponry.
The US naval and air force pilots would take issue with the soviet military contribution to The NVA.
Soviet SAMS were a powerful and effective weapon provided to N Vietnam
Every bit as dangerous as the HIMARS.

Considering he is in obvious cahoots with Putin this doesn’t seem like a bad idea. The government seems to finally be putting pressure on these quasi collaborators.
Musk isn't in "cahoots". Musk is just naive about this stuff. He believes the world should be all rainbows and unicorns.

Ukraine should threaten to blow the Dnipro dam further up river to flush the ruskies out and prevent them from blowing up the ZNPP. Are Russians good swimmers?

I meant "Vietnam" in the sense that people just say Vietnam to reference the Vietnam war. Your knowledge of the history around the Vietnam war seems a lot stronger than mine. I haven't really got time to start researching this properly.

ok. However the example you made it doesn't fit at all on Ukrainian situation.

Putin won't stop at the annexed regions, he'll go further.

you don't really know that. And going towards a war with an uncompromising behaviour makes impossible to actually know that.

That's thinking about Putin as Putin, because he didn't stop at Crimea.

he didn't stop at Crimea because the diplomatic ways finalized to solve Russia worries about its security were completely sabotaged, sending to Russia people totally incompent and opposed to find any kind of compromise as Liz Truss, who didn't ever know where Donbass is in the world, just to make an example. you can't give the 100% blame of the beginning of a war to an other, when YOU, you actually have made NOTHING in order to avoid it, but you put gazoline on the fire instead!

I'm not rubbishing the idea of diplomacy, I would love I diplomatic solution to this war, but Putin has already demonstrated he won't take part in any negotiations that aren't on his terms.

Actually, Russia could say exaclty the same thing. And I think it could have more reasons then us on this point. there never was at all any kind of even minimal openness about even just one problem presented by Russia.

You've got a point, it's easy to look at appeasement before WW2 "a posteriori" (fancy way of saying 'hindsight is 20/20' if anyone's stuck). I wasn't suggesting that the events leading up to WW2 be used as a cookie cutter to justify nuclear escalation. I was highlighting it as a historical example to illustrate how it played out in the past with someone in a similar position of power to Putin who held similar aims. History is full of examples which show much of what appeasement has ever achieved is to embolden dictators and lead to a bloodier war than the one we sought to avoid to begin with.

It's not a similar situation, it's an opposite situation: Hitler was sure to obtein results because he thought that the "democracies" were too much "pacifist" to stop him. Putin, instead, is disposed towards diplomatic settlements, but he find a wall of concrete.

The history is FULL of examples in which "Appeasement" has brilliantly achieved the goal to avoid wars. An example? 1962 Cuban missile crisis. Just to say one.
For sure... if you search in the history of wars, you will never find an example in which "Appeasement" worked, of course!
But.. try instead to find, in the "history of the wars never broken out", how much times an uncompromising behaviour has avoid wars, and then compare it with how much times to be disposed to compromises has avoid wars.

No, appeasement in that situation would have been the West removing their nuclear weapons from Italy and Turkey for fears that the USSR might use theirs in Cuba. In that situation, uncompromising behaviour forced Kennedy and Khrushchev to reassess their strategic priorities. That led to negotiations, not appeasement, in which both sides were willing to make concessions. For all his talk of wanting negotiations, Putin has already demonstrated during this war that the only negotiations he is willing to take part in are negotiations on his terms. Negotiate with him, yes, but do not appease him by giving him any of Ukraine.

This description perfectly highlights why this situation is so similar. You're looking at that "a posteriori", not "a priori". Some factors during Weimar likely strengthened his beliefs that are beyond the scope of this thread. Hitler likely gained that belief when he saw how weak the response was to him tearing up the post-WW1 settlements. That emboldened him to attack all the countries that he did. A message we likely sent to Putin when nothing was done about Crimea's annexation. He believed he could take out Ukraine's government in three days, and that we'd be too "pacifist" to get involved in a war that was already over. That's not me assuming anything, that's information that has actually come out.
you don't really know that. And going towards a war with an uncompromising behaviour makes impossible to actually know that.
I'm not making any blind assumptions, I'm basing what I'm saying on patterns of behaviour Putin has already displayed.

Sources? If I rock up to Porsche, demand they give me a free Porsche, get nowhere, then go back and threaten to blow all of Porsche up unless they give me a free Porsche, should they give me it? All because I go around saying I've hit a concrete wall with Porsche because they won't give me a free car and that blowing them up is now the only option? Should we negotiate so I don't blow them up? Absolutely. Should they give me a free car? Absolutely not.

ok. However the example you made it doesn't fit at all on Ukrainian situation.
Yes it does. You'd said that the US supplying the type of weaponry to Ukraine that NATO has supplied is unprecedented, I used that example to highlight it is not as unprecedented as we might think. @Seriously pointed out that equipment was provided to North Vietnam for use against US armed forces which was just as deadly as HIMARS. Ukrainians have been given strict instructions that NATO weapons are to be used for self defense only. North Vietnam used their weapons for self-defense too. The two situations have many similarities.

I don't really want to hijack this thread debating whatabouts. If you don't agree with me that's fine, but I worry we might be taking things a little off topic now.

We should ensure this department is all-consuming for Russia, but no more.

Russia will fail through exhaustion, rather than a chaotic defeat that might throw up an even more belligerent leader than Putin.

Sources please.

For your 2 requests of sources:
1. Vice versa, I ask you some sources about something in which we are supposed to have accepted some of Russian worries about their security. Don't hide ourselves behind a fig-leaf with "sources" on obvious facts, and let's say the things for what they are: we don't give a fuck about Russian worries. But we can even expect that they agree about that.

2. I really have to bring sources about that? That Liz Truss made a complete ass of herself in front of Lavrov not even knowing what she was speaking about, for sure is not a secret at all. Imagine to be Lavrov... and you see arrive in front of you from UK such an idiot: what you should think about Occidental real interest to avoid a war?

In fact what you say it didn't happen, it was what actually happened. If Kennedy had said "if you don't remove the missils, I nuke you", the war would have broken-up for sure! But behind the threats, Kennedy allowed to dismantle the PGM-19 Jupiter in Italy, Turkey and UK.

Yes it does. North-Vietnam had never used almost any kind of weapon against US, not even a rifle. The weapons provided by North-Vietnam for the South were for guerilla, and weapons for guerilla can't be compared at all with stuff such tanks and artillery! In fact, the "Vietnam war" was not a conventional one.
North-Vietnam entered the South with any kind of weapon only after the US departure, in order to reunify the Country, but the South fell almost not firing a shot.

Got myself caught up on the war news. I am back and will start regularly contributing to this thread. Was busy with work.

This is getting off topic. I don't agree with you and you don't agree with me. That's fine.

Great idea to move on to the current intended subject.

I agree with you that's fine, and I don't search a polemic, but a discussion. Saying that it's OT, it's a way to close the discussion, and I take note of that. Nonetheless, IMHO the discussion made is not OT: you have made similarities with Vietnam and Hitler in relation to the present. And then, when one make reasonings about that comparing the present to the past... then he is OT, because suddendly we are speaking about Ukraine and not Vietnam. However, as I said, I take note, but how could be possible to not agree about historical facts, as the poor figure made by Liz Truss, or that in the Cuban missil crisis USSR and US reached reciprocal concessions (as we should do nowadays... here because is not OT) it's a mystery.
