Russian resorting to 60-year-old battle tanks; Kremlin military split widens​

The Russian military is responding to heavy armored vehicle losses by deploying 60-year-old battle tanks, the British Defense Ministry said Monday.

Even units of Russia's premier tank force, the 1st Guards Tank Army, may be re-equipped with the "vintage" T-62s to replace more modern tanks that have been destroyed in the war, the ministry said in its latest assessment of the conflict. Since last summer, about 800 T-62s have been taken from storage, some getting upgraded sighting systems to improve their effectiveness at night, the assessment says.

Russian BTR-50 armored personnel carriers, first fielded in 1954, also are now being deployed in Ukraine, the assessment says.

Elite Russian tank brigade suffers 'catastrophic' losses in minefield:
Russia's elite 155th Brigade is reportedly refusing to advance on the Ukrainian town of Vuhledar after suffering 'catastrophic losses' at the settlement's mine-laden crossing point.

The armoured division appears to have mutinied following orders to drive straight into a heavily fortified minefield which has been dubbed the 'corridor of death' following repeated futile advances.

Vuhledar has resisted Putin's suicidal wave tactics for months and nearly wiped out the brigade towards the end of January, now reinforced with powerful American antivehicle mines.

Ukrainian military vows to hold Bakhmut as Russians close in:​

CHASIV YAR, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian military leaders expressed determination Monday to hold onto Bakhmut as Russian forces encroached on the devastated eastern city they have sought to capture for six months at the cost of thousands of lives.

Less than a week ago, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the defenders might retreat from Bakhmut and fall back to nearby positions.

But Zelenskyy’s office said Monday that he chaired a meeting in which the country’s top military brass “spoke in favor of continuing the defense operation and further strengthening our positions in Bakhmut.”

Intense Russian shelling targeted the city in the Donetsk region and nearby villages as Moscow deployed more resources to try to finish off Bakhmut’s resistance, according to local officials.

“Civilians are fleeing the region to escape Russian shelling continuing round the clock,” Donetsk Gov. Pavlo Kyrylenko said.
