A U.S.-made Patriot missile defense system being used by Ukraine likely suffered some damage from a Russian strike, two U.S. officials said on Tuesday, adding that it did not appear to have been destroyed. One U.S. official, speaking on the condition of anonymity and citing initial information, said Washington and Kyiv were already talking about the best way to repair the system and at this point it did not appear the system would have to be removed from Ukraine.
The Patriot is considered to be one of the most advanced U.S. air defense systems, including against aircraft, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles. It typically includes launchers along with radar and other support vehicles.

Damage to a Patriot air defense system following a Russian missile attack near Kyiv is minimal, three US officials tell CNN. US sent inspectors to examine the system on Tuesday and system itself remains functional, the officials said
CNN, citing an unnamed US official, said that the Patriot system in Ukraine received "minimal damage" as a result of the Russian missile attack.
According to the TV channel, the radar component, one of the main elements, was not damaged.
In turn, the speaker of the Ukrainian Air Force, Yuriy Ignat, said that it is impossible to destroy the Patriot air defense system with the Kinzhal missile.
Ignat explained that Patriot is a complex system, the elements of which (command post, radar and up to eight launchers) are located at a distance from each other. Given this feature of this complex, it is impossible to destroy the system with one "Dagger".
Meanwhile, British intelligence says Russia has made it a priority to try to neutralize Ukraine's improved air defense capabilities, but has lost several more Kinzhals in the process.
British intelligence also notes that "the apparent vulnerability of the Kinzhals is probably a surprise for Russia: the Russian president advertised the system as invincible."
At the same time, a source told RIA Novosti that the American Patriot air defense system was destroyed in Kyiv by a MiG-31K dagger carrier from an air ambush.
The source told the details of how the Patriot was destroyed in Kyiv:
- the speed of "Daggers" allows them to reach military facilities in Ukraine in a matter of minutes;
- Patriot does not have time to change position after firing or load new missiles into launchers;
- as a result, American air defense systems were suddenly hit from an air ambush;
- the enemy could not do anything to protect their anti-aircraft systems.
