Russia dismissed Ukraine’s Easter truce offer – then declared its own days later

Russia has announced a unilateral Easter ceasefire in Ukraine, days after previously ignoring Kyiv’s offer for a holiday truce, while a senior Kremlin envoy is in Washington for talks with the Trump administration.

According to Russian state media agency TASS on 9 April, President Vladimir Putin ordered Russian forces to halt combat operations from 16:00 on 11 April until the end of 12 April. However, troops were instructed to remain ready to respond to Ukrainian actions.

Moscow said it expects Ukraine to follow suit, framing the ceasefire as a Russian initiative.

Explosives found near pipeline in Serbia probably ‘Russian provocation’, says expert
However, Zentsev said from the public evidence it did not appear any effort had been made to place the explosives on the pipeline itself – and the Ukrainian, close to the country’s security services, said he believed that the incident was probably a false-flag operation conducted by Russia’s GRU military intelligence.

“This meets the standards of the GRU,” said Zentsev, reflecting the incident’s military dimension. Last month, Magyar accused Orbán of inviting GRU agents to help him with his attempted re-election. The Russian embassy in Budapest denied this, describing suggestions of GRU involvement as “openly false information”.

An environmental disaster in Moldova has Russia’s fingerprints all over it

Two days earlier, Russia had attacked Ukraine’s Novodnistrovsk hydropower complex 15 miles upriver. Cojocari had been kept awake all night by the sound of shelling. “No one slept in the [Moldovan] district of Ocniţa that night,” he told me.

There was no official information from either the Ukrainian or Moldovan governments on the oil spill into the river when Cojocari went filming along its banks. But soon after posting his footage, he received calls from the Chișinău ministry of the environment asking him to confirm that the footage was real.

The next day, the ministry publicly announced that the water in Naslavcea was being tested and that officials had asked Ukraine about the origin of the spill. On 16 March, nine days after Russia attacked Ukraine’s hydropower complex, Moldova declared an environmental alert, the president Maia Sandu laid the blame squarely on Moscow.

A crisis centre was set up to monitor the spill and remove the pollutant. Oil traps and barrages made from textiles and absorbent materials were erected, and authorities provided people with alternative water supplies. But for many local residents, this felt like more than just a contaminated water issue.

Russia suffers ‘record’ soldier casualties as Ukraine ups drone production
Russian casualties are mounting, its recruitment is falling and its territorial acquisitions are dwindling, recently released figures suggest.

The casualty rate for Russian soldiers in Ukraine increased to a new monthly high in March, according to Ukraine’s armed forces. They say drone production enabled a record number of strikes.

Ukraine tallied Russian casualties at 35,351 last month, with drones causing 96 per cent of them while artillery and small arms fire accounted for the rest. That casualty rate was a 29 per cent increase on February, said Ukraine’s commander in chief.

Europe Is Accelerating a NATO Fallback Plan in Case Trump Pulls Out.

WSJ, DETAILS:

A fallback plan to ensure Europe can defend itself using NATO’s existing military structures if the U.S. departs is gaining traction after getting buy-in from Germany, a long-term opponent of a go-it-alone approach.

The officials working on the plans, which some officials are referring to as “European NATO,” are seeking to get more Europeans into the alliance’s command-and-control roles and supplement U.S. military assets with their own.

The plans—advancing informally through side discussions and over dinner meetings in and around the North Atlantic Treaty Organization—aren’t intended to rival the current alliance, participants said. European officials are aiming to preserve deterrence against Russia, operational continuity and nuclear credibility even if Washington withdraws forces from Europe or refuses to come to its defense, as President Trump has threatened.

The plans, first conceived last year, underscore the depth of European anxiety over U.S. reliability. They accelerated after Trump threatened to seize Greenland from fellow NATO member Denmark, and are now gaining fresh urgency amid the standoff over Europe’s refusal to back America’s war in Iran.
