Southern Griffin 25 exercise develops joint operational capabilities of special forces from NATO member countries:
The Utti Jaeger Regiment will lead an international special forces exercise from August 25 to September 12, 2025. The exercise will develop the interoperability of special forces from alliance member countries in northern European conditions. Approximately 1,600 people will participate in the Southern Griffin 25 exercise. In addition to Defence Forces personnel, conscripts and reservists, special forces from alliance member countries and representatives of various authorities from Europe and the United States will participate in the exercise.

The exercise forces operate throughout Finland. Exercise activities take place on land, at sea, in the air and in inland waterways. The exercise is led by Colonel Kimmo Nordberg , commander of the Uti Jaeger Regiment.

Common operating methods ensure the ability to operate together. The aim of the Southern Griffin 25 exercise is to strengthen the cooperation and compatibility of the Finnish Defence Forces' special forces and special forces aviation with allied countries and other authority units. In addition to the activities of operational units, the exercise will also develop joint leadership and command structures to a greater extent than before.

International exercises have been part of the Uti Jaeger Regiment's established operations for years. The exercise area, which stretches from southern to northern Finland, creates demands, especially for leadership and logistics. The large area increases the complexity of the exercise, making it a developing entity on many different levels. Joint training of special forces in Finland's demanding conditions enables the rapid targeting of allied capabilities to Finland's defense and demonstrates the Defense Forces' ability to receive international support at all levels of operations, says exercise director Colonel Kimmo Nordberg.

Special Forces Aviation in Support of Operations. NH90 transport helicopters and MD500 light helicopters from the Utti Jaeger Regiment are participating in the exercise. The Finnish Air Force is supporting the exercise with F/A-18 Hornet fighter aircraft. In addition, aircraft from other participating European countries and the United States are participating in the exercise. Helicopters and transport aircraft support the exercise by transporting materials and personnel. Flight operations and the training ammunition used may cause noise pollution.

Reindeer husbandry and the ongoing hunting season will be taken into account in the implementation of the exercise.
Spotting training groups dressed in various combat uniforms is challenging in forested terrain. Due to the hunting season starting in August-September, hunting districts are informed about the exercise through the Finnish Hunters' Association. The Utti Jaeger Regiment informed reindeer herders in Lapland's training areas about the exercise through the Reindeer Herders' Association.

According to Spiegel, an annual increase of around 20% is planned, both in the number of weapons systems and their effectiveness. Furthermore, Kyiv is to receive support in expanding offensive air capabilities, including long-range precision weapons such as cruise missiles, which could be produced directly in Ukraine with German financial and technological assistance.

The German plans also include equipping four mechanized infantry brigades. This would require approximately 480 armored vehicles annually, including infantry fighting vehicles.
