🇵🇱🇧🇾 Polish services are closing the border with Belarus tonight.

According to Polish authorities, the main reason for this is the start of the joint Russia-Belarus "Zapad-2025" strategic exercise on the Belarusian side of the border.

Earlier on Thursday, the Russian Foreign Ministry threatened Warsaw with "consequences" if it decides to move forward with its plan to close the border with Belarus.

Russia's Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated that Poland's border closure with Belarus is "destructive" and will harm trade, escalate tensions, and affect border residents. She urged reconsideration but mentioned no military threats. This is confirmed in reports from Moscow Times, Anadolu Agency, Reuters, and others on Sept 11, 2025.

NATO-Lithuania Security Talks (Vilnius, September 11, 2025)​


NATO Supreme Allied Commander General Alexus Grynkkewicz: "If Groups of Drones Arrive, Trigger Article 5"
"If large groups of drones were to approach the NATO border, there would be no doubt that it was an attack. In such a case, additional defense measures would be immediately activated to gain full control of the situation," said Alexus Grynkkewicz, Commander of NATO Forces in Europe, today during a visit to Vilnius.
"In such an event, the scenario would be completely different from yesterday's. The Alliance's Article 5 would be directly triggered," Grynkewicz added.

Large drone swarms approaching NATO borders would be deemed a deliberate attack (not accidental), triggering plan activation, additional capabilities deployment, and potential Article 5 response—"a very different ball game."
 

ZAPAD-2025​

  • Takes place this September 2025, in Belarus.,
  • This time, the Baltic politicians are more concerned. Not because of Russia's usual bullying, but because this is the first ZAPAD since Russia's full-scale war, when Russia attacked Ukraine under the similar cover of a different military exercise.,
  • Now the projected numbers of Russia+Partners by Lithuanian intelligence said (August 23, 2025) that up to 30K soldiers may be involved. They said that “Around 6,000–8,000 will be stationed in Belarus, with several thousand in Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave.”,
  • Another report (August 20, 2025) said that: “the Russians are trying to hide the number of troops in Belarus."
 

Counter ZAPAD-2025​

The Eastern Flank of NATO is responding, by my rough estimate, with at least 50K soldiers.​

  • NATO’s "Quadriga 2025" complex series of military exercises is led by Germany, together with 13 NATO countries, by rehearsing a real-life scenario: the defense of NATO's eastern flank under realistic war conditions. The German soldier contingent alone is 8000 soldiers, combined with the others for a total of possibly 15000?. (I haven’t found those numbers yet.) This series is in direct response to ZAPAD-2025. The link describes the series of exercises, which include the above and below the Baltic Sea parts, as well.,

  • Poland’s Iron Defender (exercise "Tarasis 25") 2025 military exercises, which is in addition to Poland's involvement in Quadriga 2025, is led by Poland. These exercises are in direct response to ZAPAD-2025. It will involve around 34,000 military personnel from all branches of Poland’s armed forces, as well as troops from allied NATO countries, including soldiers from the Joint Expeditionary Force.,

  • Lithuania’s Thunder Strike 2025 military exercises, which is in addition to Lithuania’s involvement in Quadriga 2025, is 10,000 reserve and active-duty Lithuania soldiers, with approximately 2,500 soldiers actively training. The exercise also includes the imposition of temporary curfews in certain areas of the capital, Vilnius, and the city of Kaunas. Lithuania is additionally clos ing its airspace near Belarus ahead of the Joint-Russian Belarusian ZAPAD-2025.

  • Latvia’s VERBOOM exercises in August 2025 are to improve the soldier’s skills in neutralizing fortified obstacles. It includes the Canadian, Spanish and Italian contingents of the NATO multinational brigade in Latvia, as well as military engineers from the United Kingdom and France.

  • Latvia’s National Armed Forces 2025 military exercises. In addition to Latvia's involvement in Quadriga 2025, are national military exercises in September and October. These exercises include the "Namejs" exercise, which is attended by 12,000 soldiers from all NAF units, as well as NATO Allied soldiers.

  • Finland’s National Armed Forces 2025 military exercises. In addition to Finland's involvement in Quadriga 2025, is a series of exercises directed by the Finland’s Army Command, that will include six exercises in different parts of the country. Approximately 6000 persons from the Defense Forces will take part in the exercises. In addition, the Utti Jaeger Regiment will lead an international special operations forces, of up to c. 1,600 personnel, of training exercises during 25 August-12 September 2025 to develop the combined joint operating capability of special forces of the Alliance’s member nations in Northern Europe’s conditions. The exercise will be include special operations forces and agency representatives from Europe and the USA.

BLOOMBERG - NATO WORKING ON DEFENSIVE MILITARY RESPONSE

NATO is preparing a defensive military measures in response to the drone incursion in Poland to strengthen deterrence across the alliance’s eastern flank, according to a person familiar with the matter.
There will also be a political response, according to the person, who requested anonymity to discuss private matters. An initial one was delivered on Wednesday, with Secretary General Mark Rutte and other allied leaders condemning Russia’s “reckless behavior.”
The military response will be coordinated by Supreme Allied Commander Europe Alexus Grynkewich, who is responsible for planning and executing all the alliance’s military operations, according to the person.
His command is now assessing the situation and what supplies, if any, would be needed, the person said. NATO is a defensive alliance and any response would focus on strengthening its deterrence posture.
