Ukraine reports a significant portion of Russia's strategic bombers have been destroyed.

Umm shouldn't we be returning back to DEFCON 3 now or even DEFCON 2? No way Russia can't respond to this only by conventional means.
As of now, there are no indications of an imminent nuclear attack. We are constantly monitoring and assessing the events and will let you know if there’s any cause for concern.

Of course we should also consider the possibility that NATO could stage a nuclear first strike before Russia can recover or launch such a "use em or lose em" strike themselves.

If Ukraine took out all of Russian nukes, there'd be nothing to worry about.
Of course there's a good chance NATO will be invading Russia because they'd have a rare window of opportunity which wouldn't stay open forever. Maybe this can be done by giving Ukraine immediate membership and invoking Article 5 retroactively. Nuclear weapons could potentially still be needed to eliminate enemy strongholds.

This is not logical.
1st Eastern Europe has no interest in engaging or subjecting Russia. They simply want left alone.
2nd Western Europe doesn’t want to militarily control Russia, they don’t have military numbers to control the mess it would create. They don’t want a mess the want a compliant Russia and cheap hydrocarbons.

Lastly nato is not militarized expansionist treaty entities. It is a voluntary treaty organization who’s members must have stable borders and no ongoing conflicts to join.

Unless of course we begin to read and hear statements from nato nations leaders about “Russia being an “existential threat” to nato and this necessitates NATO invading Russia first

Nato won't invade Russia. Why would they?

If Ukraine had actually managed to take out all of Russian nukes I'd have recommended DEFCON Infinity.
Ukraine didn't managed to talke out all of Russian nukes. What they took out was bombers able to use those nukes. Russia still have somes, and even without bombers, they have submarines and land-based silos that can launch nukes.

So no, Russia isn't "nukeless"

I'm sorry but this is absolute nonsense.

Some of these conversations are beyond funny . It's sad.
I am amazed and entertained by how different we all think. Putin will not use nukes as retaliation of loss of a few old bomber planes. He will stop displaying them as agreed with the US now. But the US can do the same. Nato isn't going to do shit simply because Putin won't attack a nato country. Some here get so excited about things that truly just aren't worth the level of attention given. All hyped up by media and western governments. All for fear mongering the European countries to maintain interest and support for Ukraine.

we will know by Putin's next move, he can't let this attack stand, there must be a response, the issue is he must calculate something that will not drag NATO or Europe into the conflict but have enough teeth to keep the hardliners off his back and ensure he looks strong enough to stay in power.

my gut feeling is more attacks like the same and a show of strength maybe a cyber attack.

while I am not worried and think 5 is the correct number, situation is fluid and waiting for russia's full response will give better insight, could this be the start of things moving up the escalation ladder? sure, but right now is the waiting game. moving the level will just cause more worry, lets wait to see what happens, I think 24-72 hours will tell us.
