NATIONAL SECURITY REPORTER FOR WSJ: The Trump admin believes a nuclear deal with Iran is growing increasingly unlikely, senior U.S. officials told reporters Friday, a rare acknowledgment that one of Trump’s core foreign policy goals of capping Tehran’s nuclear program might not be achievable through peace talks.

The officials said Iran should release a statement declaring that the Strait of Hormuz is open and that it will stop shooting at ships. One of the officials suggested there would be serious consequences if such a promise isn’t made by Saturday, other officials gave no deadline.

The senior U.S. officials said that if Iran can’t abide by the interim agreement/MOU—which gave Iran financial benefits in exchange for reopening of the strait—then there is little hope of reaching a far more complex nuclear deal.

The comments raise questions about whether President Trump is preparing for another major shift in strategy after declaring the U.S.-Iran ceasefire over.

At 7:15 p.m. ET today, U.S. Central Command forces began launching the third round of strikes this week against Iran after Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces blatantly attacked M/V GFS Galaxy, a Cyprus-flagged container ship transiting the Strait of Hormuz. A civilian crew member is missing and the vessel is unable to continue the journey due to an onboard fire and significant engineroom damage.
In response, the United States is imposing a heavy cost by continuing to degrade Iran’s ability to attack civilian mariners and commercial ships freely transiting the strait. The strikes are being carried out at the direction of the Commander in Chief.
