U.S. Defense Officials have reportedly decided to Expand the Special Operations Forces Liaison Element (SOFLE) within Taiwan, as several Teams of Green Berets with the 1st Special Forces Group, 2nd Battalion, Alpha Company will soon or have already arrived at Amphibious Bases used by the Taiwanese Army on the Islands of Penghu and Kinmen which is only roughly 6 Miles from the Chinese Mainland; these Teams will work towards the Training of Taiwanese Special Forces on the Tactics and Equipment of Western Forces, while also assisting in the planning of Defending the Taiwanese Islands against an eventual Chinese Invasion.
The Taiwanese Ministry of National Defense and the U.S. Department of Defense have Refused to Officially Confirm or Deny this Deployment.
TAIPEI – Taiwan's top security official told parliament on Monday that China runs "joint combat readiness patrols" near the democratic island every 7-10 days on average, saying Chinese forces were trying to "normalize" drills near Taiwan.
China has in recent years stepped up military activities near Taiwan, with almost daily incursions into the island's air defense identification zones and regular "combat readiness patrols" that included drills by its air and naval forces.
China claims democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, over the island's strong objections.
Taiwan National Security Bureau Director-General Tsai Ming-yen said Beijing usually dispatches around 10 warplanes and three to four naval ships on joint patrols near Taiwan, calling them part of a "multifront" effort that also includes economic coercion and misinformation campaigns to pressure the island.
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) on Tuesday (March 12) thanked the White House for making a standalone request for military assistance to Taiwan in next year's budget request for the first time in history.
In a press release, MOFA said that U.S. President Joe Biden’s 2025 Fiscal Year Budget Request released on Monday (March 11) included a historic standalone request of US$100 million (NT$3.14 billion) for Taiwan military assistance. If approved by Congress, this fund would be utilized through Foreign Military Financing channels to purchase weaponry.
Deputy Secretary of State for Management & Resources Richard Verma on Monday called the budget request "a historic investment in Taiwan’s military." He said this is the first time the White House has included a specific line item for Taiwan.

NEW: The Japanese government plans to better protect the public in an emergency, such as a contingency in Taiwan. Officials have decided on a basic policy for building new shelters in parts of Okinawa Prefecture, and improving other evacuation facilities nationwide. - NHK
TOKYO -- The Japanese government on Friday revealed guidelines for building shelters on southwestern Okinawa islands designed to protect citizens for roughly two weeks in the event of a military crisis involving Taiwan.
The central government will pay for designing and construction of emergency evacuation facilities in Okinawa prefecture's Sakishima islands.
Communities accessible only by aircraft or ship will qualify. They will have to draw up and publicize evacuation plans for all residents and hold joint drills with central and prefectural governments. The central government has identified five Sakishima communities as meeting the requirements, and will begin negotiations soon.
The Cabinet Secretariat will help design the facilities while the Ministry of Defense will provide funding for construction in the cities of Ishigaki and Miyakojima as well as the town of Yonaguni, all of which host Self-Defense Forces bases.
The Fire and Disaster Management Agency will pay for shelters in the town of Taketomi and the village of Tarama, which do not have any SDF bases.
Shelters will be constructed under new public buildings and designed to house evacuees for roughly two weeks.
They will have electricity and communications equipment, as well as a daily 3 liters of water and other supplies per person. Each evacuee will have about 2 sq. meters of space. Exterior walls will be made of more than 30 centimeters of reinforced concrete.
Well you can have shelters or bomb shelters that are not "fallout proof" but purposed for war. But yes given Japan's history of natural disaster isn't a bad idea to have shelters in remote locations like islands to have a safe place for a couple of weeks for its citizens to protect themselves.General disaster shelters. Not nuclear shelters.
