The IAEA has been informed of a series of drone attacks in recent weeks that further threatened nuclear safety and security at the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP).
The reported attacks included strikes on 19, 20 and 27 September on the nearby Zaporizhzhya Thermal Power Plant (ZTPP), damaging transformers that are of vital importance for supplying off-site power to the ZNPP, which has experienced frequent external power outages during the conflict.
To enable necessary repairs at the ZTPP, IAEA DG @rafaelmgrossi is negotiating a new localized ceasefire with both sides with the aim for it to take effect very soon. It would be the eighth such IAEA-brokered ceasefire to help secure off-site power for the ZNPP.
In addition, an attack on 22 September reportedly disabled an off-site radiation monitoring station, reducing the capability to monitor radiation levels near the ZNPP. Other attacks hit buildings in the city of Enerhodar, where many ZNPP staff live. One person was reportedly killed.
And I believe diesel is getting harder to get due to the ongoing wars in Europe and Middle East! Great just Great!Director General Rafael Grossi is negotiating an eighth localized ceasefire with both sides to allow urgent repairs at the thermal plant, as ZNPP relies on reliable external electricity while diesel reserves for backups remain strained.
