Yesterday the Secretary-General said NATO was not going to be on the ground in Ukraine because they wanted to avoid escalation, in response to being asked about the peacekeeping mission. I think he reiterated that today as well.

It's a NATO meeting, G7 meeting, and then a EU meeting. It's doubtful the other two would have much to do with a potential Polish peacekeeping mission.
As I said the other day here. They are making it clear to Putin that he cannot win. If it defeats Ukraine, then it loses with severe sanctions, if it accepts Donbass and neutrality, in addition to being that Russia failed to invade Ukraine, most sanctions would continue, two defeats. He cannot accept defeat, because it would be the end of him in office and he would be eliminated soon after. So he starts to think, I restore the fear about military power and I get a negotiation with the West that alleviates part of the sanctions, leaving only sanctions in areas of the Russian military and political sector, but freeing the rest of the economy. Yeah. I was just thinking exactly the same. I felt a bit like that at times about some of the pandemic headlines and experiences as well, yet all that had become so normalised.
The news of the last few weeks is very reminiscent of the movie "The Day After" from 1983. Just change the names, Soviet Union for Russia, West Germany for Ukraine. The rest follows similarly. Increase in hostilities. In the film, the Russians invade West Germany and attacks with low-power nuclear weapons begin. Then 30 minutes to the end.
Well I for one don’t ‘know’ that. There are many ways out. At the current time, I think outcomes of the current crisis not involving use of a nuclear weapon are far more likely than the use of one - but that said, the probability has obviously increased in recent weeks.
