Remember that UN speech Reagan gave and he mentioned how the nations of the world would react if aliens ever showed up.

Funny you should mention Reagan's speech because their is a major hearing next week in Congress about UFO's. According to some senators who had a private report, they are quite concerned that there are things moving around sensitive airspace that they have no way of stopping.

This subject could be the biggest thing in our collective history; but it seems that we are still to preoccupied with terrestrial matters. Imagine finding out we are small fry compared to what ever is out there. That would put a dent in a few egos.

Part of me thinks it will be used by the DOD to ask for more money to build weapons to fend off a potential alien threat.

Of course; but the senator said those words, and there is a UFO hearing in congress on the 17th of May. In fact, quite few elected US officials have gone on record recently. That said, the subject itself has been researched for decades. It just seems that it is more acceptable to talk about nowadays.
 
Also UFO doesn't = ET. All it means is: Something was flying somewhere and we don't know exactly what it was.
If I was the DoD I would want to find out what these things are, maybe they're secret programs orchestrated by my enemy. I would want to get to the bottom of it, purely from a military perspective.

It's simply that we don't know the perfectly reasonable explanation for some weird things some people have seen/recorded. There could be a multitude of different things that cause a weird thing, now jumping straight to "ALIENS!" seems illogical.

I think most people with an objective mindset on this issue appreciate that there could be multiple explanations; but there are cases that defy all 'known' material and natural explanation. What those objects are is still a matter of conjecture.

I personally find the subject fascinating.

The DOD had a task force that has been investigating UAP's (as they classify them). I think the congressional hearing on the 17th is about some of their findings.

FWIW, Politico yesterday, in an unauthorized interview with a Defense Department official, indicated there is some weird/intense secrecy & gatekeeping around the subject.

Back in 2001 - a week or so before 911 happened - the then defence secretary Donald Rumsfeld, claimed the pentagon was missing 2.3 million dollars. I wouldn't be surprised if much of that was being funnelled into the black world (special access programs) - among other things. How much that has risen to as of today is anyone's guess; but it wouldn't be beyond the realms of possibility that some of that money was being used to investigate and research the phenomenon.

I have read a few books on the subject. If half of what I read is true, then it would be the mother of all paradigm shifts.

One last note... Please only discuss the topic at hand here... Which is congress finally publicly discussing UFO's. Let's focus on that please.
