SEOUL, June 26 (Yonhap) -- North Korea launched a ballistic missile toward the East Sea on Wednesday, but the missile exploded in the air, South Korea's military said, amid a possibility that the North could have test-fired a hypersonic missile.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said the missile was launched from an area in or around Pyongyang at around 5:30 a.m., and the intelligence authorities of South Korea and the United States are conducting a detailed analysis.

A military source told Yonhap News Agency that the North appears to have test-fired a hypersonic missile, but the test is believed to have ended in failure after the missile flew some 250 kilometers.

Smoke appeared to emanate from the missile more than previous launches, the official said, raising the possibility of combustion issues. The official added the missile could possibly be powered by solid propellants.

Solid-fuel missiles are considered to be harder to detect ahead of a launch compared with liquid-fuel ones as they require less preparation procedures, such as the injection of fuel.

North Korea successfully conducted a multiple warhead missile test on Wednesday, according to state media, after South Korean military authorities claimed the test was a failure.
The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said the “individual mobile warhead separation and guidance control test” was technical in nature and that full-scale testing can now begin.

North Korea successfully launched the Hwasong-11Da-4.5 missile capable of carrying a 4.5 ton-class super-large warhead Monday, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). "The test-fire was conducted with a missile tipped with a simulated heavy warhead to verify flight stability and hit accuracy at the maximum range of 500 kilometers and the minimum range of 90 km," the KCNA said.
It added that the country will conduct another test of the missile in July to "verify flight characteristics, hit accuracy and explosion power of super-large warhead at the medium range of 250 km."

N. Korea's military education delegation leaves for Russia amid deepening ties:
SEOUL, July 9 (Yonhap) -- A delegation of North Korea's military school has departed for Russia, state media said Tuesday, amid deepening military cooperation between Pyongyang and Moscow.

The Korean People's Army military education delegation led by Kim Kum-chol, president of Kim Il Sung Military University, left for Russia on Monday, the Korean Central News Agency said in a one-sentence dispatch.

It did not provide further details, such as the delegation's itinerary and purpose of the visit.

The trip marks the first public visit by a North Korean military official to Russia since North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a pact that calls for providing military assistance without delay if either comes under attack.

Kim Il Sung Military University, named after North Korea's late founder, is a training institute for North Korean military officers. Leader Kim Jong-un is known to have taken courses at the school after returning to the North from Switzerland.
