What, exactly, did the moron think was gling to happen? India isn't alone in gravitating towards China and/or other alliances.
 
Been saying from the start, this is the one thing that will never work on India - coercion. We're too proud a people to give in. Also, something critical to this understanding is that words and insults are meaningful and significant in Asian countries - applies not just to us, but to Japan, South Korea & China too. Asians take insults much more seriously than you do.

Sure, eventually we'll reach a trade deal, but as said multiple times previously, any deeper cooperation has been strangled.
 
People like Navarro and Lutnick have tanked 25 years of painstaking and bipartisan work from both the Indian and American sides to build productive U.S.-India relations. "The road to peace in Ukraine" most certainly does not "run through New Delhi" and it is quite the deflection to say so. The President of the United States was seen smiling with Putin in Alaska a few weeks ago, which has made us even more incredulous. And calling India "a strategic freeloader" on weapons purchases is gratuitous nonsense and deeply ahistorical. But history, context, and politics haven't been of much interest to whoever is making policy toward India these days.

This guy is a loose cannon - but the Treasury Secretary has said much the same thing, this stuff is either uncoordinated and unauthorised, which is concerning enough, or else coordinated and authorised, which would make it policy. At this point, it is hard to avoid the conclusion that the relationship, such as it is, is largely on hold at best but potentially unravelling if someone doesn't put a floor under this, fast, and perform substantial damage control.
 
The problem is that India is being the fool. They are gravitating toward China because the US has upset them. Yet China doesn't like India. So India is moving toward an enemy simply because the US made them mad.

This is the same thing we saw when Australia tried to make nice with China. And Australia figured out China did not have Australia's best interest at heart.

I don't believe any actual cooperation with China is on the table; this is to show Trump that India has options, and perhaps take advantage of the temporary access to the Chinese economy for growth.

Regardless, this was fully unnecessary and pointless. There was no need to sabotage relations.

Well one thing to remember is that the scale or level of antagonism between nations is almost elevated in the public spectrum vs private dialogue between leaders.

No this is not always true I know but it’s a good rule of thumb. And today with social media and public forums it’s all the more true.

I read today where one prominent group was paying up to $8000 a month for social media influencers.

But to the point of India making nice with China. Whatever this looks like it’s safe to say it will be a matter of short term convenience at best.

India wants to play the roll of counter weight to the power blocks. The US currently asking more than India is willing to give, such is life. It just delays any negotiations out some. No reason to trash two decades of improvements

Once again, you need to think about it from our side. Trump has been the one who's dragged out the antagonism to the public's eye. Truth Social is where we hear about his latest policies. You can't apply conventional wisdom here. And as I said, insults are taken very differently here in Asia.

Once again what? I wasn’t blaming or casting aspersions at India at all. I even acknowledged they seem to be making what they see as the best choice for them.
So much for seeking the middle ground!

You weren't blaming or casting aspersions, but you were also minimising the damage that has been done and portraying it as somehow purely media-driven when it is clear to everyone that concrete and meaningful damage has been done to the bilateral relationship. It's not just up to you to decide if it isn't enough reason to trash two decades of improvement.

Point being, you're underestimating the damage done. It isn't worth it. It's perplexing and confusing as to why the US is blowing up its relationship with India.

I never said this is solely a media inflated issue. I made a general observation on foreign relations and media reporting on them. Only as something to consider.
I’m sorry you took it that way but that was not what I said.

I would also point out you are not looking at it from the American perspective either.

But sure so much for moderation and meeting in the middle, why bother
