Iranian officials say the long delayed Rasht-Astara railway, the missing rail link on the western branch of the International North & South Transport Corridor, is finally moving from framework to execution:

♦️Iran’s roads minister Farzaneh Sadegh tells APA the implementation contract (valued at €1.6 billion) will be signed with Russia within about two weeks, with a follow up visit to Russia planned to formalize the deal.

♦️She says that although Iran was initially required to cover 15 percent of project costs, Moscow has now accepted that Tehran cannot meet that share, and legal financial details are being adjusted accordingly.

♦️Earlier statements from Iranian officials and regional outlets confirm the same €1.6 billion figure, a Russian state financed loan structure, and a construction horizon of roughly 48 months, with land acquisition already completed for much of the 160+ km route.

♦️Russia’s Caspian Service is identified as the main builder, working under Iran’s Construction and Development of Transportation Infrastructure Company, with construction expected to begin in early 2026 if the implementation contract is signed on schedule.

This is something very important it seems almost everyone everywhere has overlooked today. Not a single OSINT account, not a single Western Wire I've seen report this today.

But a direct rail line from Russia and Iran is bad news for Ukraine and Europe. Which is why this post was in Ukraine thread @DEFCON Warning System. This is mostly a threat to Ukraine and wouldn't of reported it honestly if it didn't effect Europe.

How do you see that?
👉A direct Russia & Iran rail link is a sanctions bypass and logistics multiplier.

👉It makes it cheaper and safer to move drones, missiles, components, and goods between two sanctioned states, which supports Russia’s war on Ukraine, and reduces Europe’s economic leverage. That is why it is indeed very bad news for both Ukraine and Europe.

Sorry I did not spell that out in my first post. It felt obvious to me in the moment, but I forget most people are not as "juiced into the world" or plugged into this stuff as I am. I quite literally live in this material, also have a encyclopedic & photographic memory for it, so my brain sometimes skips the explanation step and expect everyone to know what I know.......

And yes, that was me kissing my own ass. 😂

Cheaper, yeah. Safer...maybe not so much.

I don't think it is as bad of news as that. Iran and Russia already have trade. This is just another avenue.
Cheaper, yes. But I would really not wave this off as “just another avenue.” that would be extremely not smart no offense....

Rail is not just another route, it is the backbone of bulk logistics. One long freight train can move what takes dozens of trucks, on a fixed schedule, at lower cost, and with far less friction.

👉That is exactly the kind of capacity you want less of between Russia and Iran when we are talking about drones, missiles, components, metals, fuel and other inputs Europe and Ukraine do not want flowing freely.

We already know they trade... This turns a series of one off truck/ship lanes into a dedicated high capacity spine, and that is why this is far, far, far more than background noise or not so easily brushed off. By seemingly everyone. Baffled really at everyone, hasn't been picked up ANYWHERE. Would think this would be all very obvious to the OSINT community.

Yes. I agree completely.

It does however mean bridges.

Bridges are targets. Lovely stationary targets.

A few large drones carry ~500 lbs+ hitting a crossing anywhere (but buttresses are always best) are going to shut down the railroad and drive both countries crazy defending them. I see it as a Ukrainian opportunity. ❤️

Edit: I have never seen this but…For UA vrs RUS there are going to be marshaling yards. Trucks cueing: Target annd even more important, all that heavy equipment runs on diesel. Turntables, cranes, tugs, trucks and somewhere they will have propane cached.

I ❤️WP

I just don't see Ukrainian spy intelligence operating in the Middle East for sabotage operations. But I could be wrong.

👉And if that was the case they'd already be blowing up the already existing bridges and logistical lines between Iran and Russia which they have not thus far. But things can always change I suppose.

Yeah. It's also highly vulnerable.

Plus how much can Iran deliver? They are still rebuilding after getting their tails handed to them from Israel.

Doesn't mean rail isn't making things better. I am not dismissing i.t

@NuclearID My position does not disagree with yours. They will get hit. Drones and direct action teams. Most for the former and some of the later will be intercepted and destroyed, kill or captured. But the main point is to threaten it. That’s it. The UA is already launching 1000km (500lbs +) large warhead Cruise missiles. Current production is low but will ramp up fast as they have just put it into full service. The Russians and Iranians will have to defend it. All of it. Even now the UA is currently working on cruise missiles a of which has a 1500km targeted range. <open source>

  1. If Russia's economy is starting to go unstable, and Iran's economy in shambles, how realistic is this?
  2. If Russian companies or contractors build the line into Iran, and construction commences, does that change how Israel (or the US) conducts future strikes against Iran (if they are required)?
  3. What happens if a hypothetical Israeli or US strike takes out the line and kills Russians?

You have given me things that I have not thought of yet. I did contemplate the Israeli end. But I didn't tie it into the aspect of how you drew it.

I am going to get back to OSINT work as it's been a few minutes since I've seen what's going on in the world... Then we'll get back to you after I've given some of your questions some thoughts, because your questions have definitely gotten the gears going in my brain.

Russia and Iran are reportedly nearing the signing of an executive agreement for the construction of the Rasht–Astara railway in northern Iran. The 162-km rail link is a key missing section of the International North–South Transport Corridor (INSTC), strengthening connectivity between Russia, Azerbaijan, Iran and the Persian Gulf.

  • The X post reports that Russia and Iran are close to signing an executive agreement to build the 162-km Rasht-Astara railway, completing a key gap in the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) linking Russia, Azerbaijan, Iran, and the Persian Gulf.
  • Recent Iranian statements confirm land acquisition is nearly done, with a delegation expected in Russia within weeks to finalize the contract and enable construction by a Russian contractor, building on a 2023 intergovernmental financing deal estimated at €1.6 billion.
  • Completion would boost freight capacity along the INSTC western route, supporting growing Russia-Iran trade flows such as grain exports and reducing reliance on truck transfers across the current break.

Suppose my original assessment a year later still holds true. Thank you @william for bumping this old thread and updating us on this situation. 👍
