Hochstein: I had very constructive talks with the Speaker of the Parliament, Navia Berri, and we continued to narrow the gaps. I came here because we have a real opportunity to bring the conflict to an end. This is the time to make decisions for the parties. The window of opportunity is now. I hope that the days Those who are close will lead to decisions.

Why are we involved?

IMO: When this goes bad (and it will) we will be blamed. The US should really stick to what we do best: sell amazing weapons and, at times, use our military to completely dominate any area at any time we choose.

We (the US) totally suck at nation building. Really suck. Like horrible. The UK set things up that took as much as a century to unravel. We usually can’t get to the airport after signing accords before the wheels fall off the wagon.

YMMV

The series in the north. Ahead of the arrival in Israel of the American envoy, Amos Hochstein, estimates in the political system are that, unlike the situation in Gaza - in the north, Prime Minister Netanyahu is striving to reach an agreement. Among other things, a ceasefire in the northern sector is in line with his political and political schedule.

According to a senior political official: "The continuation of the war in the north may damage Netanyahu's public image and he takes that into account."

Most of the maneuvering force in Lebanon is made up of reservists - the scenario of prolonged fighting without a clear horizon may cost Netanyahu mandates. Also, in Israel they prefer to reach 01.20, the date of President Trump's official inauguration, with the cease-fire arrangement between Israel and Lebanon - including the possibility of a temporary cease-fire, when negotiations continue without active fighting in the background..

The American envoy Hochstein at a press conference after the meeting with Navia Berry: "In a few hours I will go to Israel to continue the discussions after I have just finished the talks with the Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament. We will go step by step and work closely with the authorities in Lebanon and Israel and will update you on what we will achieve".

There are significant chances of Israel reaching a ceasefire agreement in Lebanon, a senior defense official tells reporters.

The official says a United States-backed deal that would see Hezbollah gradually withdraw north of the Litani River and the Lebanese Army retake responsibility for south Lebanon, is in reach.

US special envoy Amos Hochstein is in Israel today meeting separately with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz along with IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, to discuss the ceasefire negotiations.

Hochstein held meetings with the Lebanese side in recent days, and said that "additional progress" had been made.

Under the potential ceasefire, the Lebanese Army would be responsible for preventing Hezbollah from re-establishing itself in southern Lebanon.

According to the defense official, if Israel sees Hezbollah attempting to rebuild infrastructure in southern Lebanon, it would notify the Lebanese Army via the US to act against the terror group. If no action is taken by the Lebanese Army, Israel reserves the right to act, according to the official.

The official says the IDF will also maintain the right to act to thwart any immediate threat, such as identifying Hezbollah operatives preparing to carry out an attack or a weapons shipment destined for the terror group.

Lebanese civilians will be able to return to their damaged villages in southern Lebanon under the potential agreement, and Israel does not plan to hold a security zone in southern Lebanon. Instead, Israel says it will act against any Hezbollah presence in southern Lebanon as necessary, either directly or by notifying the Lebanese Army via the US.

The UN peacekeeping force, UNIFIL, will likely still have presence in southern Lebanon after a potential ceasefire is signed, though Israel does not see them as an important player in enforcing the removal of Hezbollah..

️The Prime Minister will hold a limited security consultation tonight on the issue of regulation in Lebanon. Sources familiar with the content of the discussion say that it is a "significant" consultation. In Israel they are still expressing optimism about the possibility of announcing agreements this week.
