American Airlines Flight 5342 an Black Hawk Collision (&) Rescue Air Ambulance Learjet 55 Crash - UPDATES

I live in Kansas and have taken that last of the evening flight into National Airport many times over the years. The airport closes down at 10 pm due to noise restrictions, at least I assume it still does. I'll share some info about that flight mainly because it says something about the type of people like to be on the passenger list. I hope nobody I know, but it isn't out of the question.

This flight was established primarily as a “citizen lobbyist” flight, meaning regular Kansans, like the mayor and city manager or school board of “FillInTheBlankVille” would travel to get their 15 minutes with Jerry and Roger and Tracey then meet with their staffs.

Same thing with all the trade associations, like the wheat growers, or the American Legion, or the oil and gas guys. Now, even some local reporters were using it to cover the Capitol.

This is peak “lobbying season” so I’m sure there was a bunch of people on that plane getting ready to land, maybe have a late supper with some pro from a national group, then hit the Hill running in the morning. There was a US Figure Skating Championship in Wichita this past week, with a followup workshop of some sort. A few US skaters, family members and two team coaches who were Russian skaters 30 years ago were on the plane. I have seen nothing yet about other passengers, but we won't until families are notified.

Found the following link to a video allegedly showing the collision in the sky...

BREAKING: Video shows the moment American Airlines flight 5342 from Wichita, with around 60 people onboard, collided with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Link in bio for updates.

Moderator, please delete my repeat post. I can't figure out how to delete it myself. If I'm going to comment , I need to figure out how to use this platform properly. Sorry.

Yep the rotary wing aircraft flew fat dumb and stupid straight into the approach path.

It was like demolition derby between an MG Midget and a school bus on 65 mph highway and the MG ran a stop sign.

It very disturbing and very sad. I always used dark humor at work. If it offends, it is not my intention. 😞

I’m praying for all of them.

There is speculation circulating from one of the people who posted the tower conversation (Brian Bartlett) that the helicopter pilot may have been watching the wrong plane.

Late on Wednesday, Bartlett, an amateur pilot who works in D.C. for a communications consultant, shared a one-minute, nine second audio clip on X reportedly from the DCA control tower.

He wrote: "Here is the relevant audio from the DCA tower. Starts with controller asking the helicopter (PAT-25) if it has the CRJ in sight, and instructs it to pass behind the plane. Then you hear controllers responding to the collision in the background, then instructions to other planes."

Bartlett went on to suggest there may have been confusion between the Black Hawk pilots and the DCA tower over which aircraft they were talking about.

He commented: "As a pilot, the only scenario I can imagine is that the helo pilots must have thought the controller was talking about a different plane. Like, 'oh yeah, I see that one that's basically landed.' And they didn't realize he was referring to a different plane further out on final.

"Even if that was the confusion, it's hard to imagine how you still don't see a not-so-small jet, with its landing lights all on, coming in straight off your left side. Around an airport environment, with traffic call outs coming from the tower, I'd have my head on a swivel."

This is a reasonably good dissection and distribution of informations at this time. Normally, military pilots, myself included don’t bother switching to VHF, which is the frequency the civilian aircraft were using and we stay on UHF. Towers have receivers strictly for the military so we could talk to them without civilian pilots hearing us.

There’s a lot of good reasons , could be security, but the main reason is we generally use UHF it goes farther. It’s not quite as clear but it’s clear enough. Anyways, getting off track enjoy the video discussion.

I WAS watching the wrong plane on the videos! IMO The tower did a huge disservice by not being completely clear that there were 2 Fixedwing when asking if the helicopter had the traffic.

I really believe that’s exactly what happened. That little strip of airspace is so damn busy that the controller is trying to squeeze three planes into an area that should only have one and the way he stacked them, all of them arrived at the approach end of the runway at about the same time.

Once the helicopter saw the what he believed was the landing traffic and not the overflight, the controller‘s life was considerably easier as helicopters always weave their way through airspace avoiding fixed wing traffic.

I'm just getting word it was the US Figure Skating Team that was aboard the plane including coach.

Can't find confirming source....

This is potentially a dumb question, but I will ask anyways. Where was TCAS in all of this? Is it not installed in CRJ aircraft nor helicopters ?

NM - The video post from @Torch talks about it @11:00 mins in. According to this video, under a certain altitude, TCAS oral alerts are disabled (400ft on descent) to help reduce cockpit stress / stimuli.

and your right there was a lot of questions that came up how in the hell did the control tower not alert the chopper that they were in the flight path and why was the chopper in the flight path to begin with.
Wasn't the heli's transponder turned off? I may be mistaken though

“The selection process is so long, so incredibly difficult to become an air traffic controller that we’re in a shortage.”

@SweeneyABC explains the rigorous training and testing required to become an air traffic controller after Pres. Trump went on the offensive against DEI initiatives at plane crash briefing.

Video:

Secretary of Homeland Security:
"Our Coast Guard saw the collision and immediately responded. Our cutter was the first boat on the scene of the tragic DCA plane crash.

This morning, I went to Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling first thing to see the rescue & recovery operations from the water and offer all resources of the Department of Homeland Security to help support multiple agencies & first responders.

Please pray for the families of all the victims and the safety of all those involved."

POTUS hasn’t spoken to service member families yet - but will soon – in meantime WH is setting up crisis center for families impacted, it will be in Bethesda MD.

Many of the families are from Kansas and are coming here.

WH official tells FOX: “The priority right now is setting up the family crisis center and the White House intends to speak with families at appropriate times”
