Either way. India can shut it off before it reaches Pakistan. Many dams along the way on that river.
I guess the question is does India actually cut off the flow of water or is saving that as an escalatory step to keep Pakistan from responding to whatever it does.

Normally, no. The problem I see is the comparison to the Oct 7 attack on Israel. In response, Israel blew the pogies out of Hamas and leveled Gaza. India is looking at Israel's response and is probably thinking they should do the same.

The question is: Will Pakistan stand by while India goes after a radical militant on Pakistani territory? Will India expand its operation to other targets?
Agreed, Pak can’t just let Indian SF prosecute culprits at will. It’s tough situation.
That leaves few low risk responses for India

By that logic it would require a larger force ( if you compare Gaza with Kashmir )
Comparing Gaza to Kashmir isn't a great analogy in this circumstance when both governments are ready to respond along the entire zero line. That would be plenty of kilometers worth of positions that have been entrenched over decades. Plus India and Pakistan are on more of a peer to peer level where Gaza was always in the underdog position

Wasnt me comparing, I only responded on the forum admins msg, and added it would take time for a large force to build up. ( if this is a full scale war ) Yes they have positions and Garrisons, I think there is also a UN pressence in the area. I dont think it will escalate into a full blown war, I think India just want Pakistan to admit and cut funding to those groups. ( also an indicator is that fleet and air is moved, you would see them move out as the last pieces if this was intended to be a full war, but I can be mistaken and India is prepared, and moved its landforces before - but that would indicate a false flag )

Eh agree to disagree. If it were the USA we were talking about then I would tend to agree, but I am unfamiliar with the Indian military and their prerequisites for moving assets like that. This just does not seem like a situation where a diplomatic outcome is achievable, not trying to be a pessimist but from an outsiders POV it looks like they both are about to go at each other with no constraints.

Question: Is the DEFCON level valid globally? For someone in New Delhi can I consider DEFCON 5 as valid for me as well?
No it's not public, this site level has no relation to any US Military branch.

Idk about how staff feeling. But this is not normal peacetime in my view. No matter how you dissect this.

PLUS with Iran looming in background... the indo-pak crisis alone is... enough. But with Iran still looming large in the background things are a little to spicy for me on world stage to even remotely come close to saying things are normal or at peacetime...

Keep a high level of awareness and take it step by step as this unfolds. At the end of the day, do whatever you feel is right.

Though even in Delhi you will have plenty of time to make a decision to leave. Indo-Pak war if it comes to it will be a slow burn to the nuclear threshold. Not fast. So, breath, we are still in early stages of escalation latter. But a clear one has been put forward and international community seems unwilling to step in and stop the climb of the ladder. So...

Yep I know this isn’t a military branch, just if the alert level is valid globally :)
Been having a hard time sleeping past few days with this crisis

I don’t blame you, if I were in Delhi, I’d be losing sleep too. Not saying there’s immediate risk, but I’d definitely be thinking about it more than I am now. And not just nuclear, there’s always the added layer of terror threats. Please stay safe.

That said, I’d take some reassurance in knowing you likely have a window to act if things start moving. Pakistan isn’t China, they don’t have the capacity for instant retaliation. Things can’t spiral at hypersonic speed the way a U.S.–China scenario might. So yes, you should have time to assess and react if needed.

No promises, of course. But it’s one of the few structural advantages we still have left in this mess, Pakistan can't escalate as fast (literally due to military limitations) as most other countries could.

Appreciate you. You raise good points. How large exactly is the gap in military capabilities between India & Pakistan? Sources I could find appear biased one way or the other.

edit: double posted on accident

Neither India nor Pakistan is transparent about the full scope of their military capabilities and for understandable reasons. Much of what’s out there is based on external estimates, intelligence assessments, or politically filtered disclosures. So any comparison relies on logical analysis rather than perfect data.

That said, India holds a clear upper hand across nearly every conventional military domain including manpower, air power, naval reach, and industrial capacity.

Pakistan’s military, while professional and battle hardened in counterinsurgency, is significantly smaller and less equipped for large scale conventional warfare.

Where Pakistan compensates is with its nuclear posture which is aggressive by design. Unlike India’s “No First Use” policy, Pakistan maintains an ambiguous first use doctrine designed to deter Indian conventional dominance. Pakistan has a weaker army so therefore relies heavily on its nuclear deterrence...

Pakistan nuclear strategy is built around the idea of using tactical nuclear weapons early in a conflict if they perceive an existential threat.

Pakistan is also believed to delegate nuclear release authority under wartime conditions to field level commanders, which raises serious risks of miscalculation especially during escalation.

👉 Bottom line. The imbalance is real... but it’s also what makes this crisis so dangerous.
