so what????? an explosion in DC at a power plant seems pretty big to me
Yes, machines do sometimes malfunction and seeing as power plants function with flammable materials.
Don't blow up this situation for no reason.

Apparently it was caused by a fire at a substation in southern Maryland. Power is gradually being restored now.

At this time, the staff are monitoring the situation. However, the outage was due to a small explosion on a power transfer line elsewhere in Maryland. On top of this, a surge tripped several generating units.

There was a post on 4chan /pol/ about this. Apparently there was outages across a lot of the US ( I don't live there, I don't know. ) But that's probably not true, the only source of that was anonymous posters and a map that was able to be edited by anyone. Something did catch my attention though, a screenshot of something on Reuters. http://tinypic.com/r/2u9mkp3/8
It's now named differently, and other sources say that they don't expect any terrorism... It's probably just a random event that happened, similar to Russia and their submarine on fire.

Power is back on in White House too, I think.

4chan cannot be taken serious, unless there are other reports of nationwide power outage, I don't believe it.
Also the image is edited trough HTML, wich is incredibly easy.

"Widespread power outages hit White House, Washington area" is the original link.

I don't think the Submarine has anything to do with this, at all.

Ah, thanks for clearing that up.

I wasn't saying there was a connection between the two events, just that something completely out the blue could happen anywhere.

Good hustle on the story. Even if its nothing now, it might not be one day.

Agreed. I didn't even know about this until now.

They're saying it's not terrorism, or any kind of attack, but it's what they're NOT saying it is that has me wondering. This means it has to be filtered before it gets out to the public as to the source. Ruling out spontaneous power transformer combustion, I wouldn't be surprised if DHS found the BlackEnergy malware courtesy of our Russian friends.
You can read about it here http://abcnews.go.com/US/trojan-horse-bug-lurking-vital-us-computers-2011/story?id=26737476, here http://insider.foxnews.com/2014/11/...rate-us-power-grid-install-malicious-software, and especially here http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/01/16/cybersecurity-powerplants-idUSL1E9CGFPY20130116

And since I'm next to WY, and they supply our power, this one has me hoping they found a way to neutralize said malware. http://popist.com/s/abffff1/

It was most likely a transformer going up. They can be pretty explosive. Not saying that it's the cause for certain, but it's the most likely. We've been having issues like that up here in the great white north for the past few months. Been colder longer, had a lot of snow, which means lots of salt. Combined with the more recent methods of pre-spraying roads with brine solution, and haven't had the rain to wash salt build up from winter off the infrastructure. The result has been a rash of transformer fires, leading to outages.

I wonder if Vlad can find some deleted emails while he's at it.

Boy wouldn't that be rich?!
