South Carolina approves AP1000 nuclear reactor units at the V.C. Summer site in Fairfield County. The LOI starts a six week feasibility phase, joint selection of a project manager, evaluation of construction providers, and advanced offtake talks aimed at an MOU.

Santee Cooper states the goal is completion with private money and no ratepayer or taxpayer expense, with about 2,200 MW of carbon free capacity targeted. Westinghouse involvement is anticipated, and Centerview Partners and J.P. Morgan are advising.

Japan’s nuclear industry is openly talking about building new reactors for the first time since Fukushima. Kansai Electric has started surveys for a new reactor in western Japan, and Tokyo’s long term goal is nuclear supplying about 20 percent of the grid by 2040, up from under 10 percent now. Industry and government are both tying this to runaway electricity demand from AI and data centers.

South Korea's Hyundai Engineering says it signed a nuclear power plant design deal with U.S. developer Fermi America to work on four commercial reactors in Texas. Hyundai calls this its first U.S. nuclear contract, and Fermi says the reactors will anchor an 11 GW private power system for AI-scale demand.

Google and NextEra Energy plan to restart the Duane Arnold nuclear plant in Iowa, which shut in 2020, and send most of its power to Google's AI and cloud operations under a 25 year deal. The plant is targeted to return to service in 2029, pending approvals.
