The World Nuclear Association estimates annual global nuclear investment must rise from approximately $75 billion to $250 billion to deliver governments’ stated nuclear development plans.

Spending is projected to peak from 2041 through 2045 with approximately $1 trillion for large nuclear plants, $450 billion for SMRs and $84 billion for reactor lifetime extensions. Around 50 countries now have formal plans incorporating nuclear energy.

The figures represent required investment, not committed capital.

Commonwealth Fusion Systems raised another $1 billion in equity financing, bringing its cumulative private capital to $4 billion.

The funding will support commercialization and development of the planned ARC grid scale fusion plant in Virginia, targeted for the early 2030s. CFS’s SPARC demonstration machine remains under assembly in Massachusetts.

EDF plans to invest €8.7 billion through 2040 to adapt its nuclear assets to extreme weather.

Measures include evaluating supplemental cooling systems for additional reactors, incorporating lifetime climate projections into EPR2 designs and strengthening existing plants against heatwaves and drought.

EDF separately reported €11.4 billion in first half net investment across multiple programs, including Grand Carenage, Hinkley Point C and EPR2.

Orano invested €588 million during the first half of 2026, up 22.3% year over year. As it expands uranium mining in Mongolia, the Georges Besse II enrichment plant in France and resilience work at used fuel recycling facilities.

Orano reported a €34.4 billion firm order backlog. Production at its Malvesi uranium conversion facilities was halted for nearly four months by exceptional climatic conditions, contributing to lower Front End output and a decline in group EBITDA.

Finland’s Loviisa Unit 2 entered a major scheduled maintenance outage, beginning extensive modernization work intended to support operation through 2050.

Work includes reactor pressure vessel inspections, replacement of approximately one quarter of the fuel, turbine and automation upgrades, new seawater pumps and continued transition to Westinghouse supplied fuel.

Fortum estimates up to €1 billion in upgrades will be required through 2050.

X-energy & SGL Carbon signed a binding agreement to double European production capacity for NBG-18 nuclear grade graphite, a safety critical material for the Xe-100 high temperature gas reactor.

X-energy will provide up to $8 million in milestone based funding for equipment & facilities at SGL’s Chedde, France, site. The expansion could support graphite billets for as many as eight Xe-100 reactors annually and double European NBG-18 capacity by 2030.

The projected capacity remains contingent on full execution and does not represent installed reactor capacity.

Kazatomprom reported provisional first half 2026 uranium production of 13,291 tU on a 100% basis, up 9% year on year, and attributable production of 7,054 tU, up 10%.

Group sales were nearly unchanged at 7,586 tU, while Kazatomprom level sales fell 13% due to delivery timing & customer scheduling.

The company retained its 2026 production and sales volume guidance, but may revise its financial guidance on August 21st due to exchange rate volatility.

Valar Atomics announced a $1 billion Series B led by Sequoia Capital, accompanied by a $200 million credit facility led by Erebor Bank as administrative agent and J.P. Morgan, alongside Crescent Cove & Hercules Capital.

The company said the funding will accelerate the manufacturing and deployment of standardized nuclear plants.

The financing strengthens Valar’s capital position but does not constitute project level financing, a final investment decision, an operating licence or evidence of commercial reactor deployment.

Polskie Elektrownie Jadrowe transferred management of the Lubiatowo Kopalino nuclear power plant site to general contractor Bechtel, while Polish contractor Budimex was selected to execute the principal earthworks.

Preparatory work covers more than 300 hectares and includes site levelling, approximately 16 kilometres of temporary roads, drainage systems, embankments & logistical facilities.

The proposed plant will contain three Westinghouse AP1000 reactors with a combined capacity of 3,750 MWe. The nuclear construction licence remains under review, with first nuclear concrete scheduled for Q4 2028.

The United States & Paraguay signed a memorandum of understanding on Strategic Civil Nuclear Cooperation to strengthen Paraguay’s civil nuclear capabilities and establish cooperation concerning the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

No reactor technology, site, financing, construction timetable or vendor was selected. The memorandum establishes a bilateral policy framework and does not constitute a legally operative Section 123 agreement, reactor procurement or nuclear power deployment decision.

Clean Core Thorium Energy signed a fuel fabrication agreement with BWXT Canada supporting a future commercial reactor demonstration of its ANEEL thorium uranium fuel.

BWXT Canada will supply qualified fuel bundle hardware, while Canadian Nuclear Laboratories will fabricate ANEEL pellets and assemble complete reactor representative bundles at Chalk River for future irradiation in an operating reactor.

The agreement establishes the planned manufacturing pathway for demonstration bundles but does not begin full scale fuel irradiation, regulatory qualification or commercial deployment.
