Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis stated that if Turkey tries to stop the undersea electricity cable between Greece and Cyprus, Athens will respond. He noted Athens is prepared for all scenarios. The warning risks tensions and escalation between Ankara and Athens.
  • Post content: @Globalsurv shares Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis's warning that Athens will respond if Turkey blocks the undersea Greece-Cyprus electricity cable project; the attached 14-second animation depicts the cable route across contested waters, a "blocks" symbol, Greek military assets, and Turkish "ALERT" sirens to illustrate potential escalation.
  • Project context: The EU-backed Great Sea Interconnector aims to link Cyprus's grid to Greece and Europe with €657 million in funding; about 60% of seabed surveys are complete, with resumption expected soon despite Turkey's insistence on prior coordination due to its continental shelf claims.
  • Geopolitical stakes: Greece maintains it alone authorizes work in its waters and has operational plans ready, while Turkey rejects unauthorized activity; recent statements from both sides signal firm positions, heightening risks of naval confrontation in the Eastern Mediterranean. Grok

What is this beef about? Is the cable being laid in Turkey territorial waters?
The disputed section — where Greece and Turkey have competing maritime claims — lies outside Greek territorial waters and in areas Turkey also claims as part of its continental shelf. Those areas are neither Greek nor Turkish territorial waters in the strict legal sense; they are either international waters or zones subject to unresolved maritime disputes.

I visited Greece last September and saw several instances of graffiti that read: "Fuck NATO."
From what I understand, a significant portion of the population wants Turkey to leave NATO—or, failing that, for Greece to leave NATO.
