The SIPRI Yearbook for 2025 states that India is developing canister-based missiles which,
  • Allow quick deployment.
  • Are likely to carry multiple warheads in the future.
  • When combined with recent moves towards conducting sea-based deterrence patrols, suggests that India could be shifting in the direction of mating some of its warheads with their launchers even in peacetime.

For the first time, SIPRI assesses that India may have started occasionally deploying a small number of nuclear warheads during peacetime. SIPRI’s latest Yearbook estimates India may now have around 12 warheads deployed on one nuclear powered ballistic missile submarine, marking a major shift from India’s long assumed practice of keeping nuclear warheads separate from launchers during peacetime.

India’s total nuclear stockpile is estimated at 190 warheads as of January 2026.
