Millions of Americans Eligible for Canadian Citizenship by Descent

Has anyone else heard about this? Apparently, in December of last year, Canada passed a law that abolished the first-generation limit for citizenship by descent. The way that the law was worded has retroactively granted citizenship to anyone born prior to December 15, 2025 who has an ancestor from Canada. This means that millions of people, particularly in the United States, are eligible to apply for a Canadian Proof of Citizenship Certificate. There are over two million people with French-Canadian ancestry in the United States alone. I personally know of a couple of friends who are going through the process, and they have been told that there is a major backlog to secure the necessary documents.

Aside from the logistical standpoint of granting citizenship to millions of people who were born outside of Canada, what will happen geopolitically if even a fraction of those people begin moving to Canada?
