Yes saw a video of one, was not too dusty but all the crackers were mouldy and made in the 1950's They were older than me/ Don't know about canned goods but would you trust them?

As most have already said the only way to survive this is to stay out of the cities and stay inside an xray proof fallout shelter until the radiation levels subside to liveable level.

Interestingly, FEMA updated their guidance on what to do in the event of a nuclear attack in May of this year.
The pragmatist in me says that, with the ongoing war in Ukraine, this is just sensible precaution rather than a response to any specific threat. As, I hope, is the NY announcement.

This is all kind of silly to do after we came up with the h-bomb, we figured that out then too. hence why the fallout shelters in cities haven't been restocked since the second half of the sixties. hell with computer simulations now in the recent 21st century we are pretty sure that at least a good chunk of that nuclear winter stuff was right. maybe you could weather it all if you had a hearty stock of food and seed and lived well south of the equator, in addition to being away from people, you may have a chance. if you live in america, europe, many parts of russia, very very difficult for you.

I think I have a 50/50 chance of surviving, I really cant tell.
I live in a really weird area. Pretty much giving away my location here, but what you gonna do;
I live just barely NOT downwind from a military base. Its just across a ridge directly north of me (i live in a valley), and there's a nuclear power plant to the north east of me. But rarely does the wind ever travel west, southeast it usually is. So I think I will be in the only safe pocket in the area.
To the west of me across a mountain range are two major cities.

No to canned goods for me. This is most dangerous and easily one the most contaminated surface to touch or even be near. Radiation and metals are like opposing poles on magnets. Radiation sticks to this longer than pretty much anything else and the dose can be extremely high for decades.

I hope it is well-intended. There is literally so little information, you could fit it on a business card.
Nothing about radiation, nothing about preparedness. But "You got this."
I think keeping people from appreciating the threat of nuclear war with a snappy "You got this," like this is just another routine thing to "get," prevents honest and serious public conversation.
I understand the well-meaning argument that is about a terrorist nuke. But the reality is that a terrorist nuke threat in NYC is no greater, and possibly significantly less greater, than any time in the past 20 years.
So if we are looking at a 15 megaton nuclear bomb missile on NYC with a 16 square mile fireball, then no, just going inside, changing our clothes and washing as "You got this," is not going to work, and we need honest and candid discussion about USA nuclear defense and foreign wars. This is not intended to be negative, but public deserve to know the truth. Maybe it is more socially responsible to realize that our society should fear nuclear war.

Not like anyone has the right to say "I didn't know!" It's an open secret that if the war escalates to a strategic exchange, there won't be much left of New York City, and millions will die. Some of us accept that (and a subgroup may consider relocating to the countryside to get out of the blast radius); some prefer the comfort of denial, and would rather shoot the messenger (in this case - blame NYC authorities for feeding us nightmare fuel). Note that these particular officials are not in the business of discussing geopolitics and military strategies, so your reproach might be misdirected...
As for whether the public deserves to know the truth: the public can't handle the truth. It has vividly demonstrated this on multiple occasions in recent years. That's why we can't have nice things.

I tend to agree with you. But your comparison to the PRC triggered a thought.
No we’re not the PRC, we’re supposed to be a democratic republic with an educated populace that can vote and understand issues and be a government of the people.
The onus is on the citizenry to be educated and involved enough they don’t need the government to hold their hands.
All of the information is out there and no one should be allowed to say “I didn’t know”

There are no 15 MT warheads in service anymore. They were inefficient dinosaurs in a time when pinpoint targeting was still decades away and overkill was the best method of assuring the target was destroyed even if you missed.
Redo that same nuke map, but this time use fifteen 1 MT weapons airburst with overlapping 5 psi overpressure rings. You'll see that the damage radius and casualties increase while radioactive fallout decreases. This, along with hyper-accurate targeting capabilities, is why the big multi-megaton weapons are no longer made. They are an incredibly inefficient waste of energy and only one warhead can fit on a missile, as opposed to ten of the smaller warheads.
Now, that doesn't detract from the effectiveness of telling people to "Get inside, stay inside, and stay tuned." Duck & Cover was only slightly more ridiculous than this. "Get inside" is kind of stupidly obvious. "Stay inside" is a death sentence unless you have enough material between you and outside to protect you from residual radiation. "Stay tuned" is worthless since communications will be destroyed, either directly by the blast or indirectly by EMP.
Best defense is to get out of the big cities *before* the bombs go off. Easier said than done for some people, but as the Director indicated, that NYC PSA is only going to work for a small terrorist nuclear device or a radiological device. It's useless for a missile attack by a nation state.

Basically the PSA was either really inept attempt and educating the public or fear porn.
