NOAA issues a Severe Geomagnetic Storm Watch-UPDATE

Thankfully nothing tragic happened and almost all are amazed at the display.
But it’s been an immediate object lesson in how fast things can go south.

Still getting e-mail alerts from NOAA - several per hour - putting us still square in the G4/G5-level event.
No impacts noticed at our location yet.

Not so much. This is unlikely to affect people at the residential level. Most damage is going to be done to transformers, causing power outages. I'm not taking any special precautions here other than I made sure all of our vehicles' gas tanks were full.

Its not over. All the terrible stuff we been talking about could still happen. Particularly concerned of power grid management and how prepared they truly are for something like this.

Another series of CMEs associated with flare activity from Region 3664 over the past several days are expected to merge and arrive at Earth by midday (UTC) on 12 May. Periods of G4-G5 (Severe-Extreme) geomagnetic storms are likely to follow the arrival of these CMEs.

Particularly concerned of power grid management and how prepared they truly are for something like this.
I should underline that I believe a total grid collapse is NOT going to happen.

More worried about regional or isolated power outages particularly the more complicated/complex grid systems in Northern cities that have more vulnerable points on the gird. Any prolonged outtage in a urban area like NYC, Seattle, or Chicago can get dicey very quickly.

You’re correct I was just fascinated having watched it unfold and the timeline. It was so abrupt and unexpected. If it had had a major impact on the grid yesterday over 3/4 of population would have been oblivious to the cause.
 
Tonight's forecast is even further south than last night! If you want to see the northern lights make sure to get somewhere with minimal light pollution.(although here it was so intense you could see if over a rather bright city, but not in the city I live in). It may be a while before you get another chance!

a 5.8 X class flare ejected today that could reach us on the 13th.

ANOTHER SIGNIFICANT CME IS COMING: Giant sunspot AR3664 unleashed another X-flare today (May 11th @ 0139 UT)--its strongest yet. The X5.8-class explosion produced a significant CME with an Earth-directed component:


The snowy speckles in this SOHO coronagraph movie are caused by energetic particles hitting the spacecraft's camera. The particles are being accelerated toward the spacecraft (and toward Earth) by shock waves in the emerging CME. They are a sign that it is a potent storm cloud with an Earth-directed component.

This CME could reach Earth on May 13th, adding new power to the ongoing geomagnetic storm. CME impact alerts: SMS Text

Overnight, the Day-Night band of VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) detected the Auroras over much of the U.S. The bright white band is the satellite capturing the Auroras directly overhead! Did you get to see them last night? @NOAASatellites @NWSSWPC #inwx

Yea, Solar flares arent like nuclear EMPs, and do not effect electronics, really. Always a good idea to have sensitive electronics on a surge protector, though(surge protectors should also be replaced every few years)
Power lines are just so long they can collect a lot of electricity in a solar storm.

Insane to see a special weather statement on geostorms, though, like I did yesterday and today! Ive seen the warnings, just not special weather statements on my local weather forecast.
