Russian Attack Planes Buzz US Destroyer off Polish Coast

That alone would start a war most likely.

I have to agree with you. You simply cannot do things like that in peacetime. If there was ever a better chance of a war occurring today, it would've been right there and then.

Wow. That looks even closer than I imagined.

The Su-24s flew so close they made "a wake in the water" in what was said to be one of the most aggressive acts in recent memory.

Are they TRYING to get us to take a shot at them?

I thought someone said it wasn't armed? Looks armed to me.

Those are fuel canisters my friend.

Earlier that same day, two Russian Ka-27 Helix anti-submarine helicopters are said to have circled the USS Donald Cook seven times, taking photos.

The aircraft were said to have swooped in the same flight mode that would have been used for an actual attack.

If I was Captain of that ship, I'd of assumed it was an attack and fired. A lot of restraint they got there, wonder how they knew it wasn't an attack....unless they saw it was unarmed. Other than that, just took a chance and hoped for the best.

Those might not be drop tanks. Looks kinda like they were carrying an updated version of the Khibiny ECM jamming pod. That's crazy if they are. supoosedly the upgraded version of the Khibiny pod can defeat AEGIS.

I don't get how this was a simulated attack. I mean, I don't think jets need to get that close to attack something.

"Russian Sukhoi Su -24 with the newest jamming complex paralyzed in the Black Sea the most modern American combat management system “Aegis” installed on the destroyer “USS Donald Cook”. Pavel Zolotarev, Deputy Director, Institute of USA and Canada, shares details about this version which is being actively discussed in the Russian media and by bloggers.

In response, Russia sent an unarmed bomber Su- 24 to fly around the U.S. destroyer. However, experts say that this plane was equipped with the latest Russian electronic warfare complex. According to this version, “Aegis” spotted from afar the approaching aircraft, and sounded alarm. Everything went normally, American radars calculated the speed of the approaching target. And suddenly all the screens went blank. “Aegis” was not working any more, and the rockets could not get target information. Meanwhile, Su-24 flew over the deck of the destroyer, did battle turn and simulated missile attack on the target. Then it turned and repeated the maneuver. And did so 12 times.

Apparently, all efforts to revive the “Aegis” and provide target information for the defence failed. Russia’s reaction to military pressure from the United States was profoundly calm, feels the Russian political scientist Pavel Zolotarev:

The demonstration was original enough. A bomber without any weapons, but having onboard equipment for jamming enemy radar, worked against a destroyer equipped with “Aegis”, the most modern system of air and missile defence. But this system of mobile location, in this case the ship, has a significant drawback. That is, the target tracking capabilities. They work well when there is a number of these ships which can coordinate with each other somehow. In this case there was just one destroyer. And, apparently, the algorithm of the radar in the “Aegis” system on the destroyer did not load under the influence of jamming by the Su-24. It was therefore not only a nervous reaction to the fact of flying around by the Russin bomber which was common practice during the Cold War. The reaction of the Americans was due to the fact that most modern system, especially its informative or radar part, did not work adequately. Therefore, there was such a nervous reaction to the whole episode."

They'd break off after deploying their hardpoints, depends what they're carrying too, in regards to if they attack the front/rear or sides of the ship. Continuing along is pretty aggressive though which displays their intentions and "message" so to speak.

I get that, but wouldn't it be safer to do it further away fro mthe ship. I mean, you don't stand right next to a grande after you've thrown it.

If true - that is an attack by Russia on the ship - an electronic attack, but still an attack.

The incident the article is referencing happened last April. This could have been a follow up incident.

By extension, wouldn't that be an act of war on Russia's part, and a casus belli for us?

I'm not completely buying that this was a test against Aegis, even if the jets did disable it by jamming, how would Russia know, I don't even think the planes would know. I admit that I'm not real familiar with the setup, but common sense tells me only the ship's crew would know of any malfunction.

I want to see the US sail a ship past one of Russia's jets as retaliation

wait wut

...sooner or later there's got to be some form of an accident. I mean, really, we can't keep doing this forever...
