Japan’s Joint Staff says JMSDF tracked a PLAN carrier group around 880 km southwest of Okinotori-shima. The group included Liaoning, a Renhai class destroyer, Luyang-III destroyer, Jiangkai-III frigate, and Fuyu class replenishment ship. Japan also observed carrier based fighter and helicopter takeoffs/landings on May 26.

South Korea and Japan will resume joint maritime search and rescue exercises on June 7, the first such SAREX drill in about nine years, according to Yonhap. The drill is set for international waters southeast of Jeju and will involve South Korea’s ROKS Cheon Ja Bong, Japan’s Kongo Aegis destroyer, and a Japanese maritime patrol helicopter.
