Australia has received its 14th and final P-8A Poseidon, completing the RAAF maritime patrol fleet. Canberra says the aircraft strengthens anti submarine warfare, maritime strike, and ISR under Australia’s “deterrence by denial” posture.
Japan’s Joint Staff reported today that JASDF fighters scrambled after a Russian IL-20 intelligence gathering aircraft was spotted over the Sea of Japan, Sea of Okhotsk, and Pacific Ocean on May 22.
Japan’s Joint Staff says JMSDF tracked a PLAN carrier group around 880 km southwest of Okinotori-shima. The group included Liaoning, a Renhai class destroyer, Luyang-III destroyer, Jiangkai-III frigate, and Fuyu class replenishment ship. Japan also observed carrier based fighter and helicopter takeoffs/landings on May 26.

I think Russia means they will deploy in the Asia-Pacific region too.
Australia says it has deepened defence cooperation with Japan through cyber operations and command, control, communications, and computers interoperability. A key outcome includes planning around enhanced bilateral secure communications and alignment of ICT priorities across warfighting communications systems.
Australia used Shangri-La to frame the seabed as a major strategic contest, citing subsea cable and critical underwater infrastructure risks, South China Sea militarization, chokepoint disruption, and shadow fleet activity.
Japan also says the defence ministers of Japan, Australia, and New Zealand held their inaugural trilateral defence ministers’ meeting, confirming cooperation on a free and open Indo-Pacific, Pacific security, joint training, and interoperability.

Japan says its defence minister and the U.S. Secretary of War agreed to advance alliance deterrence “with urgency.” The agenda included more realistic bilateral training across Japan, flexible air dispersal, expanded presence in southwest Japan, and temporary U.S. military deployments including missile systems.
South Korea and Japan will resume joint maritime search and rescue exercises on June 7, the first such SAREX drill in about nine years, according to Yonhap. The drill is set for international waters southeast of Jeju and will involve South Korea’s ROKS Cheon Ja Bong, Japan’s Kongo Aegis destroyer, and a Japanese maritime patrol helicopter.
China Coast Guard says it conducted "law enforcement" patrols east of Taiwan on June 1st in response to Japan & the Philippines announcing maritime boundary delimitation talks. Beijing says the talks involve waters related to China’s sovereignty and maritime rights.
Jiji reports Japan’s defence minister defended revisions to Japan’s defence equipment transfer rules, saying the changes are intended to strengthen regional deterrence and avoid crisis logistics shortfalls. He framed Japan as a reliable partner for regional states seeking to defend themselves.

China’s PLA Navy has recently commissioned the Type 052D guided missile destroyer Tongchuan, Hull 177, according to state media.
Japan’s MOFA released today the Special Advisor Oue Sadamasa trip where he met Papua New Guinea’s Defense Force commander and Tonga’s Crown Prince / defense leadership during a May 25th through 29th visit. Japan says the sides discussed and agreed to further promote security cooperation.

I cannot help but question how is this different to a USA carrier group in the South China Sea as a provocation to China?

Australia marked a live fire milestone for the 155mm AS9 Huntsman, with 4th Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery putting the tracked artillery system through its first firing in Townsville.

Yes, but I have always viewed American exceptionalism, backed by moral righteousness, as the best way even if it's a charade. At the end of the day, all of the other systems harm everybody. Yes, America wants to be on top of the money pile, but at least everybody who works with us walks away better. Everybody who works with us walks away independent, sovereign, and just better overall.
America has gone without free education and free healthcare to fund an over bloated military budget just to protect everybody’s world trade on the seas. China, Russia, Europe, nobody else protects trade on the world’s seas. When a pirate attacks a ship anywhere around the world, local governments often do nothing. It is because the U.S. Navy is around, and because we intervene, that world trade remains secure. Including for US enemies.
So, at the end of the day, like I said, hundreds and hundreds, if not thousands, of years have proven that human autocracies fail quickly on a human scale/lifetime perspective of course. Only capitalist democratic societies have shown the greatest human prosperity, statistically AS A FACT, in human history.
