The Best Nuclear War Films

There was a color film though with a similar plot line set in the south pacific if memory serves. Seems like from the 90s. Maybe a different story line, Idk
I think you're thinking of the alternate reality documentary World War III. It took place on the Atlantic & Europe though. You know the movie where it has a different outcome of the Soviet Union's collapse.

Yes filmed in Melbourne Australia. I remember a story of the female lead saying making a film about the end of the world at the end of the world. She hated being in Melbourne as too backward according to her. Neville Shute was an Australian author who wrote several novels about WW2 from a different point of view. My favourite was "A Town called Alice" though he also wrote some environmental novels such as "The Tall Timbers" and a short story "In the shadow of superbus." This was about the European destruction of native Australian environments. Was apparently banned at the time.

Had a look and there is a colour verson based on Nevil Shute's original novel It is a remake done in the 1970s. I have not seen this version but it is not the WW3 film above.

There’s an oldish but goodish book called “On the Beach” where this happens. The book follows an America submarine captain that transfers his vessel to Australia after the entire Northern hemisphere is annihilated.
Wow the book must be very different to the movie then. At no time did such of the American sub captain control or give orders to the Australian military. In fact there wasn't much reference to the Australian military at all. Sub final destination was America while Australians were represented as taking cyanide pills over reports that would die anyway from radiation levels. Which actually wasn't accurate but it was a movie.

In the book he transfers his sub and command to the Australian navy. He follows orders from the Australian navy.

If he saw the old black and white movie all the singing while fishing was a bit much. Did like the end when the sub crew decided to go back to America to die in their homeland and the single sailor wandering around the deserted streets. Sad and poignant.

That's what I remember but as usual the book is different apparently.

"After the Big One: Nuclear War on the Prairies" (1983) Cold War Film

Found this on YouTube. Has a few things I didn't know in it.

This one is on Netflix
Interesting premise, but I guarantee when I look up the ratings it's terrible. You can tell from the trailer that they didn't know how to flesh out the idea and execute it properly and it probably turns into a wishy washy love story (why are they all young people??) or something because the writers are clueless.

IMDb gives it 5.6/10, what a shocker
