Here’s the thing to remember about the trade issue. After WW2 and afterwards the US offered up open markets to the US so that nations could recover their economies. We were flush and putting solders back to work.
And this was the status quo basically for 75 years. Now the US has a massive trade imbalance and debt.
There needs to be drastic changes to the system or the US import market will crash.
No nation, reserve currency or not, cannot continue debt like we have indefinitely.

That is what’s at stake here.

The big problem in the US is that it no longer manufactures anything. American factories assemble products that come from several countries. Trump wants to force American multinationals to manufacture only in the US, but where will he find the labor to perform his lower-paying jobs? (The American people don't want to do low-level jobs.)

Before the tariffs, the US economy was doing well, with almost full employment and only a 4% unemployment rate. As for inflation, the problem
could be solved this way: the government could establish
a price ceiling for several sectors of the economy. This would prevent multinationals from making even more money at the expense of the people, and the money would be better distributed among the people. Finally, this would prevent the erosion of the middle class.

Tariffs are the worst solution; inflation will increase.

The alternate is no longer viable. The world’s price fixing on US exports is Bone Cancer and Tariffs are Chemo.

The US is facing an existential threat. No trade is better than unequal trade.

You're using the words "existential threat" far too lightly. An existential threat is what Ukraine faces. A trade deficit is not an existential threat.

As my mother used to say - "save grand words for grand occasions."

The Europoid (white man/woman) is in existential threat in the USA. They don't have enough children per couple, and the 2.1 per couple ratio hasn't been reached. So if the USA doesn't want any more immigrants, they're screwed. And if we add in those who leave the USA, it's even worse.
 
U.S. President Trump’s retaliatory tariffs of up to 104% against China are set to go into effect in roughly two hours, at 12:01am EST. Additional measures have also been put in place to prevent companies from circumventing the tariffs, including a 90% or $75 per package tax on all goods coming from China or Hong Kong beginning May 2, 2025 at 12:01am EST, which will then increase to $150 per package on June 1, 2025. These taxes will apply to any goods ordered from China that are transferred by a Chinese national carrier to the U.S. Postal Service, it does not apply to goods which are transported completely by private companies like FEDEX, UPS, or DHL.

The USA loves immigrants. Legal immigrants. We want to know who is entering the country.

We want almost unlimited immigration, but we want them photographed, fingerprinted and swabbed. It not that difficult to understand.

I’m really surprised and saddened to see so many people struggle with this simple concept. Instead they huff puff, misquote and misdirect.

IMO racism is one of the primary drivers of the US political metamorphosis, and explains the main pecularities of Trump's agenda:
  • focus on preventing further immigration regardless of economic consequences
  • deportations of immigrants (also regardless of economic consequences)
  • urge to annex Canada but not Mexico
  • anti-DEI messaging and purging the US government apparatus of non-whites
I've always viewed the MAGA cult as, in large part, a gut reaction to white people feeling like they're becoming a minority in their own country. Very few will openly admit it, but I chalk that down to the ubiquitous human tendency to lie in order to conceal one's true motives (note the social stigma that still applies to openly admitting you're racist).

Demographically, you're not yet past the tipping point, but the trajectory is evident.
