I definitely disagree with not enforcing the ban.
I do not know enough but can it out right be banned? I understand making it harder to access.
And I definitely believe it should be banned from all government agency devices. But in a free society how exactly is something banned effectively in the real world as well as the digital.
Having US interests take a leading role in in the ownership is a good first step I suppose. Unless they are given complete access and control of the system and algorithms that too is pointless.
It used to be parents could control access to media books and magazines.
I tracked down the website the ADL was claiming radicalized the school shooters this year. It makes tic toc look like Sesame Street. WPD ( watching people die ) filled with unedited gore. From dead bodies to cartel mutilations and terrorist beheadings. I’m sure there are forums on there that focus and influence adolescents world views in any number of destructive worldviews. But without creating an account I couldn’t access them and had no desire to. Just scrolling the daily feed. It’s was the most dehumanizing and nihilistic digital places I’ve ever seen. The effect this must have on youth that are confused or have no solidified world view has to be incalculable.
I can easily tell see how a young person could be lured into committing a violent bloody crime. For lack of a better reason than just to see people bleed.
If so very little of your life and culture is real or value placed upon it. Death of another becomes one of the few truly real things left. Because it cannot be undone, it is forever.
Until families and communities can instill a world view that has enough intellectual and spiritual clout to buffer this type of influence. I’m afraid we’re screwed.
Banning stuff rarely works, only by offering something better are influences like this overcome.
And even then some will always end up in places like this.
I am often reminded about something my mother used to harp on. “Shame”, not community inflicted shame. But personal shame, the necessary drive to not act in such a way it would shame yourself or others.
It’s a fundamental component of group cohesion. When the concept of shame is removed from a culture the guardrails that protect that society are gone. Doesn’t matter what laws are passed.
