Russia escalates to deescalate believing it will intimidate.
NATO responds with no it won’t.
Hiding or shirking from it does not make it go away. It validates and encourages it to be tried again.

Yes you should always avoid a street fight and even evacuate if necessary.
But this isn’t just a street fight that can be ran from this is a global threat.
But if you don’t help your neighbors defend their neighborhood from a gang take over. Your neighborhood will eventually be next.

They're calling it "goodwill", but I wonder what the real reasons are. My take: the island does indeed have strategic value, but is currently an untenable position as it needs to be supplied by sea, and that's apparently not going well in the face of Ukrainian Harpoons. Not to mention it's just a big fat target for MLRS, and well in range of HIMARS (in fact, almost in range of M777 if deployed on the coast).

If Russia manages to take Odessa and open a corridor to Transnistria, expect them to retake the island as well.

To a general poring over a map it might be too tempting a prize to skip. The point hasn't really been raised a lot, but Snake Island - if sufficiently militarized - also presents a threat to Romania, and is therefore a geopolitical asset.

My guess is, they figured they could hold on to it against the weapons they expected Ukraine to field. The island would be out of Grad range; it is in range of the Tochkas, but those are quite inaccurate and probably an endangered species in UA by now. Perhaps they figured that sufficient AA cover (such as could be provided by oh, I don't know, the Moskva for example ) would cope with any attacks carried out by the UA air force. Much of this planning would have been carried out before the actual invasion.

In this particular instance, Western deliveries of anti-ship missiles and rocket artillery may have indeed been a gamechanger.

I find this weirdly reassuring. We need an Iron Curtain right now, sadly. I'm more concerned by the "Russia cannot be isolated from the world" narrative, because to me it reads like "we're gonna keep invading places".

In EU too. In Italy in particular. It's a disaster. Gazoline and diesel +100% in a few month, even with controlled prices. I don't have time to speak about the problem, but sanction are hurting us much more that Russia.

24 hours and Russian air missions over Ukraine will cease.
No the sanctions aren’t stoping Putin because he and friends have no concerns if Russians suffer.
And it will be where we end up to end this war.
And it will work and Russia will not be able to do anything to stop it.

Yes, just like Russia had warned NATO for decades about NATO's expansion toward Russia's border. NATO chose to ignore Russia, which forced Russia to eventually take action. So now, NATO decides to expand, in response to a war caused by NATO expansion... unfknbelievable . Furthermore, as NATO's sanctions hurt NATO, NATO looks like idiots... and if NATO sanctions hurt Russia, NATO will still look like idiots when Russia nukes NATO's decision-making centers.

Yes the whole West is beating itself stupid putting their own people in hardship for others. sanctions doing equal damages globally. But hey no problems brics is here now to cut down use and worth of American dollars. Limited business , trade etc. we prove to be our own worst enemy.
